And that hopefully the loss of life is not great, the TV News said the explosion was the equivalent of a 2.1 earthquake...

My Dad lives in Azle....
Only about 80-90 miles north of West.
Have not heard from him yet, but would not be surprised if he heard it.

Prayers and condolences for the loss of life and hardship for all involved.

I've been to West many times. It's such a quiet and peaceful little town. I hope the town can get back to its tranquil ways soon.

interview with the manwho filmed the explosion includes video of the explosion
Interesting tidbit about West. It like quite a few other Texas towns was established by a specific Ethnic group. In this case, Czechs.

One of my Facebook friends is in Gatesville, which is much closer to West than I thought, about 45 miles as the crow flies. I haven't heard from her, either.

Last I read there were 35 dead, the place had a mushroom cloud and the blast went off almost like it was a nuke/atom bomb, there might be more bad news later, a tragic preventable accident, according to some reports the place hadn't been inspected in 5 years. But the good news, such as it is, is that the fire I think is out.

I got word from my Dad that there were no ill effects in Azle.

Still praying for those, dead, missing, wounded, and all their loved ones.

Here's a story about a guy who witnessed the fertilizer plant explosion from Interstate 35. Two days earlier, he had just crossed the finish line in Boston when those explosions occurred. Wierd.

Finally heard from her. She didn't say anything about West.

And I really meant to say "as the palmetto bug flies" but I couldn't think of it at the time.

The latest news is a bit grim. 12 confirmed dead including an off-duty Dallas Fire fighter that lived in the area and came to assist.

I prey that it wasn't preventable . Hope they bring someone to account for it . It's no small industrial accident

I'm more upset at who built a town a couple hundred feet away from a fertilizer plant that can level the town. At least most places have the sense to put a fireworks factory a couple miles away, the same goes for any industrial plant that has large explosive potential when things go really wrong.

As to preventable, we may never know who opened the wrong valve, or flipped the wrong switch, or what welder let some sparks get away. You can have all the safety rules on the planet, but it is humans doing the work: To err is human. At least we know no one intended to blow up the plant.

Most states I think have zoning laws, Texas from what I've read does not. They shouldn't allow houses and residential facilities near anything like this, but then to some disasters like this simply can't happen.

There is negligence and intentional negligence. The simple kind is what I cited. Intentional negligence is knowing the fire extinguishers aren't charged and still running the plant.

Then there's tanks not being labeled and I'm sure there are other examples.
