All a cynical game of extortion and a protection racket and "innovation" be damned?

Foxconn must pay Microsoft for EVERY Android thing it makes

Microsoft will collect a royalty for every device built by Foxconn that runs Google operating systems Android or Chrome OS.

... a deal to license unspecified Microsoft patents on smartphones, tablets and TVs built by Foxconn that use Google's Linux-derived system software.

... The manufacturing giant is now one of the biggest names bagged by Microsoft’s campaign to force Linux, Android and Chrome OS device makers to license its patents.

Microsoft now reckons more than 50 per cent of Android phones in the world are built by corporations that have licensed its patents. ...

... Microsoft claims Android, Chrome OS and Linux violate its intellectual property rights, but has not specified which protected designs have been infringed...

I think this comment (rather unprintable in these forums) sums up the silliness nicely.

How much further do patents and the "IP system" need to be dragged into disrepute and the associated stifling litigation before being abandoned or at least overhauled?

Where were you when Apple did it first?...

Please add your example for comparison.

It's also not the first for Microsoft either. However, this latest example makes for an ever bigger anticompetitive grab.

Who what next to stifle innovation?

Is the patents system fatally flawed to cost us all dearly?

Who what next to stifle innovation?

Ask your legislature. After all you gave them the power.

Gary, yes the legislature has the power and as you have many times stated, they often are motivated and put into power by such forces as Citizens United. Big money talks very loudly.

Are you sure it is a patent? Or is it "trade dress"?
