I noticed rising and falling gpu usage while crunching seti, is this normal? My gpu temp is 69-73C on this GTX 580, I had this happen a lot on a previous GTX 590 too under 6.10.58 x64, but this doesn't happen all of the time, this is with Boinc 7.0.62 x64, Boinctasks 1.46, Lunatics_x41zc_win32_cuda50.exe and AK_v8b2_win_x64_SSSE3x.exe on 3/4ths of the i5 750 cpu, under Win7 Pro x64 and the driver I'm currently using, which doesn't seem to make much difference is 304.79, I'm using MSI afterburner 3.00 Beta9(I just upgraded from 2.30, this happened there too). This driver is as early as I've tried that works at the cards full speed in Seti/Boinc, 301.24 won't go beyond 405MHz for some reason, stock for the card is 815MHz and I have the voltage at 1.075v in an effort to get less variance in gpu usage, stock is 1.063v. You probably want cuda 4.2 on those Fermis not 5.0. Try 'abovenormal' priority setting in mbcuda.cfg Variance in gpu usage may be normal - your times look ok to me. A person who won't read has no advantage over one who can't read. (Mark Twain) |

You might want to upgrade to 314.22 drivers as well (they have caused no problems on my rigs or my 2 youngest kid's gaming rigs). Cheers. |

Some long shoots 1 - Did you remember to tell the anti-virus software (whatever you use) to not scan the boinc directory and it´s apps? 2 - In some of my I5 hosts i need to leave one core free (use only 75% of the processors) to make the best usage of the 590/690 exactly to avoid the spikes on the GPU usage. Some 2x690 hosts even needs more cores free to work fine (my tests shows that depends on your MB chipset & CPU speed). 3 - Do you have enought memory to run all the tasks and concurrent apps with not need to use the swap file by the OS? Hope that helps - take a specialy look at number 2 - and don´t forget to update to 314.22 with a clean instalation as Wiggo post. |

Just an update my machine runs with one core free, so that might be part of the answer. |

Some long shoots 1-yes 2-yes I always leave one core for loading gpu apps. 3-16GB ram I'll put 314.22 back in, lunatics zc42 installed and zc50 deleted, starting now, hopefully I can stop the crashes that happen overnight, so I'll be running during the day to watch this. What MB you Use? Did your PCIe slot realy runs at 16x? Do you use any other software running on background? Ask because i have a 580 in this I5 host http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=6797473 and runs 3 WU at a time with 98% of GPU usage with no spikes, so something else is using your GPU/MB resources. Just a note: This hosts have all 4 cores crunching simultaneusly with the 3 GPU task. I not use MSI afterburner, instead i use EVGA Precision not belive that could be the reason, but check whow much resources the Afterburner is ussing. |

What MB you Use? Did your PCIe slot realy runs at 16x? Do you use any other software running on background? The motherboard is an Asus P7P55D Pro, and yes the 580 is in the 16x slot, currently it's the only video card in the PC. 0-5% on the cpu usage by what Task Manager is telling Me. I run a web browser and My PC is swept routinely for malware, plus I have 3 console hosts running, their for the lunatics x41zc42 programs. Note: On the left, 2 wu's, on the right 3 wu's. Look´s like with 3 WU you get an stable >98% of GPU usage like i have here. |

Ok this is with minimum fan speed(well to the card anyway), otherwise as last time. On the left is when the fan was at 85% and now on the right at 40%, this is a water cooled card, don't try this on air, as the fan here in reality is a 120mm fan that's powered straight from the ST1500 power supply. 1.063v above, 1.013v below(on the extreme right only), running at 98% all the time is a problem, possibly impossible. That´s shows something else is using your resources during the spikes, you need to try to find what, maybe a hidden service? My show >98% almost all the time and i use "below normal priority" and runs 4 CPU WU normaly. Did you try to use GPU-z or EGVA Precision instead of Afterburner? Another long shoot. |

That´s shows something else is using your resources during the spikes, you need to try to find what, maybe a hidden service? Lets see gpu-z is just for looks as it's a tool, gpu-z can't set anything, I tried evga precision on the Zotac card, the speed would not adjust down to 772MHz, as everytime I tried the speed went back to 815MHz automatically, I could adjust the ram, but since the evga program doesn't work right with My card, I'll stick with Afterburner as it does work and it is an easier to use format for Me. Just saying. No there are no hidden services, I looked, no root kits or such, just the card not liking being used for other than games I suspect. Firefox here has about 40-50 screens open. The Gpu-z graph looks normal, no great spikes maybe is just the load/unload of the memory duethe large number of opened screens (i don´t use Firefox to be sure). Did you make the same test with a second core free? And see if the spikes continues? |

...just the card not liking being used for other than games I suspect. Firefox here has about 40-50 screens open. Hmm, do you have the "hardware acceleration" in Firefox turned off? If not, it will be using compute capabilities of the GPU. Adobe Flash also has hardware acceleration... Joe |

I also switched off autoscrolling too, though this hasn't had much of an effect. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Ok, I did that and the dips went away, even with 4 wu's being worked on at full speed, no dips, thanks. This was taken before I upped the settings for the card. If deep´s get away when you free the second core, that´s point to something is ussing the resources of your CPU, you need to work to find what is doing that, it´s a hard task to find that at distance. An I5 with only 1 580 must work fine with 2 or 3 WU crunching (on my host 3 GPU WU is the best number) at a time on the GPU and 1 core free. As i say before mine works with 3 GPU WU + 4 CPU WU at a time and mantain >98% of GPU usage with no deeps and priority above normal. |

RealTemp runs on My task bar and shows the cpu temps, plus I run notepad. I went back to running 3 wu's at a time, it's a bit quicker.
