If it comes up again - right mouse click, then select "hide" and it will vanish. Its a real shame that it is not possible to auto-ignore things like hardware driver updates because they have been the source of so much grief over the years.

I just checked my Vista Machines and this dangerous "Important" Update 2823324 is also in the Vista Updates to install. As of 16:48 UTC, Friday, April 12, 2013, Microsoft is still sending it to Vista machines. The only thing they have done for Vista OS's is to deselect it. No disclaimer or warning is included!

The public might almost get the impression that Microsoft is not concerned about allowing a Vista OS machine to become unbootable, or that such a disastrous outcome of installing this update might make someone believe they need to buy Windows 7 to get their machine operational again. No, Microsoft is reputable. Microsoft would -never- do that, would they?

However, to avoid such an obvious misinterpretation of their motives, perhaps it would have been prudent for Microsoft to include a disclaimer or warning with this update. Better yet, perhaps Microsoft should have removed it from the available updates for Vista, just like they said they have done for Windows 7.

The update is still available for Win7 PCs as well. Trust Microsoft? Nope, I surely do not!

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

Well, I might add that, having worked as a professional on all Microsoft OSs and most of their other products since the late 1980s, starting with MS-DOS and Windows 3.0, it is my personal conclusion that the preponderance of evidence I have seen over these decades might easily convince a jury well beyond reasonable doubt that Microsoft's prime motivation is something other than the best interests of it's users.

Now this is my personal conclusion based on my decades of personal and professional experience. I may be incorrect. It is simply the most likely scenario I can draw that fits most accurately what I have observed.

Perhaps some of you have a similar set of experiences that have provided you with a different conclusion. If so, please let me know. I would welcome any additional input.

FYI: even if you tell windows not to install driver software from windows update it will still try to do so.

What you have to do after you uninstall the update and reboot, is to "Check for New Updates". That will clear it from your Que.

Well, all the time since I set it as you show it in the picture (almost 2 years now), I've never had one single nag or suggestion from Windows Update about any HW driver updates.

Edit: The box "No, let me choose what to do", means you choose from the choices below, which will become active once you ticked "No, let me choose what to do", and in my case I selected the third choise "never install driver software from Windows Update". Windows Update has silently obeyed that for almost 2 years now. Never tried even once to install any HW drivers, or even suggested that they existed.

I figured I would report what I have seen. All of my installations out of the box are set to "never install driver software from Windows Update". I change the update setting to "Never check for updates" before saving the image.
Perhaps they don't send driver updates when doing automatic updates. However it does seem to be that they will try to push them to you if you manually check with "never check" set. At least this is what I see on my systems with Vista, Server 2008, Windows 7, Server 2008 R2, Windows 8, & Server 2012 in 4 different languages.
Since I work in a lab where we test software & drivers no updates of any kind are applied to machines without a specific reason for them. Generally we only apply service packs & makes additional images.

Hey, mate....
What does one have, if not honesty, eh?

I can get brutally honest at times.

It wins me fans and yet it gains me detractors from time to time.

I agree I do try to be honest most of the time but Microsoft have to learn that the masses can't afford 1,000 bucks every 3yr to by a new op specialy when the new op is only bells and whistles

Eg. Vista and win 7
win7 is vista with all the bugs outa it and a few extra bells and whistles
I've been told you can make your own version of win 7 with XP pro , Vista, and I think he said Win 2000 don't know if that is correct tho

Fastest / lowest-impact way of getting rid of the bad update on Vista/7/8/2008/2012 (not XP):

Open a command prompt (CMD in the program name if you can't find it; admin. privileges required obviously) Then type in or paste:

wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:2823324 /quiet /norestart

Press Enter and you're done. Could be turned into a tiny .BAT of course too.

Windows 7 works a treat
Windows VISTA not so much
wusa does not understand /uninstall in VISTA just shows a popup with help
Need to go to
control panel->system->windows update->view update history->Installed updates
to uninstall the update

Minor Nit
Windows 7 will not really uninstall the update until system is rebooted.

A new copy of Win 7 is less than £100.

A student version is cheaper than the retail price. And if you're in Europe, it's even more expensive, for whatever reasons possible. So when I put together a system of mine and saw that the price of Win7 64 bit Ultimate was at the time around 200 euros, I balked. I bought the Student version for less than 70 euros, and later that year did the same thing for another system we were making. This time paying only 50 euros for the Student version.

A new copy of Windows 7 is between 90 and 180 euros, depending on 32bit or 64bit, and whether you want Home or Professional. And here's the weird one: Home Premium 32 bit is the 180, Home Premium 64bit is the 90.

For the record my four 4 Win 7 machines and the one remaining XP one are all legit. As a recently retired IT teacher I couldn't afford to be taken to court, financially or professionally.

I don't know where Glenn buys his software from but 1000 AUD is £684, A new copy of Win 7 is less than £100. What Microsoft have had to learn is that 1/2 the world is dishonest, therefore they price their software accordingly.

For my last build I got Win 7 home 64 for $90.00 US. I just bought another copy for the same price thru Newegg for another build. Just have to watch for the sales.

He definitely shops at the wrong place, a Win7 64-bit OEM Home Premium disk costs $99aud, Pro is $139aud and Ultimate is $187aud where I shop.

Cheers.

Have to agree with that. Can get Win 7 Home 32 & 64 for £69.99 & win 7 Pro 64 for £99.99 but the 32 bit version for £102.99.

However, for my personal rigs, its approx. £12.60 per copy regardless of 32/64 - all legit & direct from Microsoft :)
