Just a heads up.
Win 7 just tried to do a nVidia driver update on my GTX560...
Luckily I was paying attention to what it was doing and cancelled the update.

I have not updated yet, so just checked and see that in the list of updates, Update 2823324 is unchecked by default. Phew, lucky that I don't always follow what MS wants me to do. :)

Can one set 7 NOT to update hardware drivers by default?

Same way as with all updates: Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\Change settings and set 'Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them'. Fixes more than Windows can break. :)

Similar path for XP:

Control Panel/System/Automatic Updates and set "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them." I always review the list before I let it proceed.

Just a heads up.

Luckily I was paying attention to what it was doing and cancelled the update.

Mark, you can go to "Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update" and click on "Change Settings" then in the long drop down box select "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them", that will stop that happening again (this is the way all the Win7 PC's are set up here as I prefer to look at what's being thrown at me 1st).

Cheers.

Thanks...already did it.
All my XP rigs are already set not to update anything, as they are crunch only rigs and I don't need them doing anything weird in the middle of the night.

Yes it always seems to be in the very early hours of Wednesday mornings here and I always seem to have a PC or 2 on my test bench stress testing after doing work on them (I always have a quick panic attack as to what went wrong but being other peoples PC's I leave them in full auto mode).

Cheers.

I have always set my Windows machines to download updates but let me choose what/when to install. Just don't trust what might get you when you're not looking.

My personal preference is for the intermediate option:

"Download updates but let me choose whether to install them"

Even with a reasonably robust internet connection, that saves me watching a lot of paint dry when I eventually get round to vetting and installing the latest batch...

Another thing you can do with rogue updates like this one or the NVidia driver updates is to right-click them and choose 'Hide update'. That saves you having to remember to un-tick it each time.

(Wording and instructions are from Windows 7, but previous versions have equivalent functionality)

Thanks, Richard.
I did do the 'hide update' thingy when it kept asking me about it.

IIRC in the win7 updater it allows you to uncheck hardware updates as an option.

I haven't seen a harware update since then.

I do not see that option available in the settings window.

Control Panel->Programs & features->View installed Updates. It will list all installed updates. Just click on the one you want to uninstall and go from there. NOTE -- You might have to recycle the machine when finished. When the machine comes back up, check for updates again, the uninstalled update should be listed. Just right click and hide it.

According to Microsoft, that update has been pulled, and is no longer available.

Thank you Bernie for posting that info in this thread. I had some strangeness going on with Piggy after that update, and now I have uninstalled it remotely.
I passed the info on to our IT Admin here at work, and he will stop it before it gets pushed to the various computers.

One very happy cruncher!

Greetings Ageless,

A really, really good reason for not having Windows automatically do updates:

I read that BOINC does not like not being shut down properly. Windows does not know how to shut down BOINC.

I have never let Windows do updates automatically, even before BOINC and SETI Classic. I don't trust Microsoft. ;)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

Greetings Steve,

If you read my last post here, I stated that I don't trust Microsoft. That update is still available. I just did my laptop and it came up in the list, though it was unchecked. After re-booting the laptop a couple times, Windows is still saying that there are available updates. That is the only one listed.

Keep on BOINCing...! :)
