Well, I have never altered a GPU bios.
You got me there, kid.

At last count, I have 19 GPUs running.
All unadulterated.

I can alter the part of the bios where it says 797 MHz to read 815 MHz, but it's a trivial matter, that I'm not interested in undertaking right now. As to loading a different bios, that's simpler still as I just used some of My old DOS skills in the matter, just like I would on a motherboard.

Ok My gpu is on v7 and Here's a screenshot from Gpu-z v0.71, it's 2 wu's vs 3 wu's on the 580. With 2 being done I saw times of 6-16 minutes @ 772MHz, now I get to see what the times will be like with 3 running at the same time.

I just installed a faster fan, 3900rpm vs 3400rom and a Corsair TX850W psu w/a single 12v rail with a 70A capacity, if there is any downclocking to be had, I'll be able to eliminate the psus, then it would be down to the GTX580 or the motherboard, hopefully nothing uneventful happens. Sometimes I wish PCs weren't so dang complicated. I had to rewire a PINK 3 pin fan extension cable to make a Dell wired fan work correctly, at the very least the red and black wires are flipped from what they would be on a PWM/3 wire fan...

Realtemp 3.70, TThrottle 6.40 and MSI Afterburner 3.0 agree that the gpu temp is about 61-62C after more than 1/2 an hour of Seti crunching...

Well less than 3 hours after I'd restarted the PC in the present configuration the card downclocked again, from 772MHz to 405MHz, the gpu temp was about 61C, so I think I need to replace this GTX580 with a better one in August, July though is spoken for, as I have a large bill to pay then.

Looking at the photos of the water cooler radiators- if the pipes are long enough, and you don't mind it looking at bit odd, fitting some brackets or straight sections of plate to the rear & top of the case would allow you to mount the radiators & fans outside of the case- would probably drop the temperatures by at least 5°c since they'd be drawing cooler air from outside of the case, not the air that's been heated inside of it.

I doubt cooling is an issue, as I've had downclocks as low as 58C, I'm pretty sure it's the card itself, nothing to do but nurse it along and then in August put it out of its misery, though I will save the cooling system...

Yeah, at those temps the down clocks would have to be the card, but when things get hot every bit of cooling helps.

With my stock systems, just taking the side off of the case dropped the CPU & GPU temperatures by 5°c. The cooler the intake air, the better the cooling effect.

It's very dusty here, We have a dry lake nearby, most of the time the lake is dry, except when the rains come, then it's wet, nothing lives in that giant mud puddle of course, during or afterwards. The fan on the gpu is a Delta made Dell part that's supposed to be rated at about 190cfm @ 3900rpm and I'm glad the fan isn't much faster, I just happened to have that fan around here, waiting to be installed. If the gpu radiator was thicker, like on the H70, the fan wouldn't need to be as fast.

I was doing some reading online about stock gtx580 voltages about one guy who couldn't get the card to go back to stock, He was advised to reset the cards settings with afterburner, so I decided to try that, the fan setting is now able to fluctuate and the gpu voltage is at 1.063v, the reset had set the voltage to 1.088v, prior to this the card couldn't maintain 772MHz for more than 15-20 minutes, I've been crunching away at 772MHz(down from 797MHz) since 11:48pm, it's now 12:27am on Monday morning and yes I'm tired. So far so good and good night.

I did, then I woke up at 5:25am to discover I had no internet, cable internet had gone down @ 12:40am(7:40utc?) according to Boinc and it seems that a lot of people with 580 gpus were having problems, so I'll be looking for GTX570 cards in August instead...

I decided to declock the 580 down to 675MHz and to leave the gpu voltage at 1.088v, which is where the bios had set the card, fan settings are at 100%, I don't know if this will hold all night, but until I get a replacement card in August, this will have to do.

Now I'm getting black flashes on screen when I scroll up or down, I may not have a card to crunch with soon and I'm way beyond getting a refund on the card since I bought the card on April 3rd...

After a reboot, the problem seems to have gone away, weird.

Posting with a lame duck video card, it seems that there's more than a few GTX580 cards that can't hold their stock clock rate or any rate above 405MHz, at least that's what I came across in a few searches, plus it's way too late to get a refund, so after the current wu's are exhausted, it'll be just a display card until I can replace it with a GTX 570, possibly in August. I'm lucky I got a months performance out of it, after it's replaced, it'll be only suitable for framing or the trash. But then I give up, reinstalling the driver after 20 minutes or after 2 or 3 hours. If I had a gun I'd probably shoot it.

I do have one other alternative to scrapping the card, putting an Nvidia made gtx570/580 heatsink/fan on the card and seeing if the card is ok or not(it's a gamble that may not work), but to do that means I will have to wait until July 1st as this idea is $23.00 delivered, since when I bought the card it did not come with any air cooling parts, so I'll just have to wait until then.

Like this one:

Of course I don't know if it comes with the screws that one needs, but I haven't asked.

I found out from the guy selling these, that it does not come with any screws, lovely, so far a net search has yielded 4-#0 phillips screws and #6 torx screws, probably 1/4" long, I'll probably ask Zotac if they know where I can get some screws and tell them why, at this point I'm out of options, unless I were to buy a dead GTX580 card and use it's parts, which would mean I'd not have to ask, still I'll have to wait, this morning I found that the browser had crashed as well as a few other programs, the desktop and the menus were working at least, so I restarted what had stopped, including BoincTasks, Boinc had stopped and had not done anything since 3:49am and I discovered this at 5:03am BT says restarting task...

I just got another email from Zotac tech support:

Hello Victor,

Please allow me some time to see if I can find the screws. I am unable to locate extras anywhere at the moment.

Regards

Brian

That's the problem with this idea, no screws, no working or semi working video card on air, at least not without looking for a parts donor on ebay, which is getting expensive, since being untested, lots of bids have been entered, no I didn't make a bid, I thought I'd pay off the loan in July and maybe in August buy a GTX570 or if I'm lucky get a dead GTX580 in July, if I have the funds that is, I really don't know yet, since it will be one of the two, I just haven't decided on a course of action.
