A great lady has left us this day
Our deepest thoughts are with you
RIP Margaret Thatcher

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher dies
Los Angeles Times | April 8, 2013 | 5:16 AM
Margaret Thatcher, Britain's first female prime minister, died today at age 87.
The BBC read out a statement from Thatcher's friend and former advisor, Tim Bell, saying: "It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announce that their mother, Baroness Thatcher, died peacefully following a stroke this morning."
In nearly a dozen years as Britain's leader, beginning in 1979, Thatcher transformed its political and economic landscape through a conservative free-market revolution bearing her name, Thatcherism, which sought to reverse the country's postwar decline and the welfare state that she felt accelerated it.

I am sorry to hear that Margaret Thatcher has died, as she did much good during her time as Prime Minster. She repaired the bankruptcy the Labour then government left, together with the Unions, in 1978/1979, she brought the Union power under control and broke Arthur Scargill and the miners. Her biggest mistake was the way the Poll Tax was implemented, and the fact Local Authorities could not use the money from Council House sales to build more social housing.

R.I.P Margaret

Baroness Thatcher

I think she was one of the greatest Prime Ministers that Britain ever had, in the company of the likes of Sir Winston Churchill. She got the Falklands back for us and sorted out the Trade Unions. That alone secured her place in history, apart from the other things she achieved. As Sir John Major former PM has said, the "Night of the long knives" that forced her to stand down "remains a scar on the Conservative Party"

She will not have a State funeral but will be accorded the same status as Princess Diana and the Queen Mother, by receiving a Ceremonial funeral with full military honours, which will take place at London's St Paul's Cathedral. She will not lie in state, in accordance with her own wishes. The flag is flying at half mast at 10 Downing Street, and in Whitehall, and the PM is returning home later today.

Like any politician, Margaret Thatcher was a controversial person. Admired by some, hated by others.
But in death, everyone is equal. Requiescat in pace Margaret Thatcher.

I wish to express my condolences to my friends across the pond.

Most of my knowledge of her comes from Streep's portrayal of her in the movie.
I was both amazed at her character and abilities and saddened by the way things ended.
I hope that portrayal was not too far off the mark.

I know you have lost someone very dear to many of you.

Rest in Peace, keeper of the people, Margaret.

I note that the Irish Times has a headline saying "Thatcher to be buried next week" Irish Times

The service will be followed by a private cremation in Mortlake, south-west London. It is believed that Lady Thatcher had asked that her ashes be laid to rest alongside those of her husband, Sir Denis, in the cemetery of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.

They have since modified their website.

I went in to town this morning (Grantham) and there is 6 different satellite news trucks on the green outside the council offices. These are here to gather opinion from pedestrians. But the number of news groups was over the top yesterday.

Only to be expected John. They do have a job to do, as the world wants to know many things. It will calm down, meanwhile the local shops will benefit from the increased trade.
