Bickering? We're not bickering, just giving that "special relationship" a good workout.

Actualy we didnt need Australia as a supply base, We took Guadalcanal as the shortest way to keep you supplied. Yes MacArthur was based there, And he did advance toward Japan fron there. But the US Navy and the island hopping would have defeated Japan with out The General. We had supply bases at Hawaii,MIdway,Wake,Guam. Okinawa would have been a major staging area had we had to invade Japan.

Now im not saying we did it alone. Hell those coast watchers are some of the bravest men Ive ever read about. And that combined British,Dutch,Austraiian and American Fleet stood up and took a beating in the early days of the war.

Most people dont know that America starting gearing up for war in 1939. But it wasnt untill about the middle of 1943 that our war production hit top speed. We finished the war with 27 fleet carriers and about 100 CVE carriers.

And the claim that the US was a minor player in the ETO. Your right, But the Russian did more fighting and dying then anybody elese.
But in the Pacific we Americans did the lions share.

We did what we did im WW2 to help our Allies. Because it was the right thing to do, not the tactical thing to do.

Today we need Aliies more than ever. WE could never go toe to toe in a war of attrition. We dont have the heavy industry anymore. Thats mostly in China. Our steel industry is a mere shadow of what it once was. Lets face it were paper tigers with out the BOMB.

Not only that but we don't have people able to just get the job done. Today we are a nation of people who would be like deer in headlights. They would want to tweet about it.

It wouldn't take but a year or two for the ramp up of heavy industry.

Still a lot of us around from the late 70's and early 80's who were part of it.

Still have auto and air manufacturing lines.

Still make iron and steal.

Message 1355507 - Posted: 11 Apr 2013, 1:29:36 UTC - in response to Message 1355215.

I was an education major in college with math and history as my primary study areas. As I am and was handicapped after graduation I had a difficult time finding a teaching position and the one that I did find was set up for me to fail. Only then did I fall back on my drafting skills to get my first job in the civil engineering field where I stayed until five years ago. Does that explain my comments to your satisfaction, Sarge?

I will answer quickly, then allowing things to return to topic.
Yes. In fact, that is credible.
As I originally studied to teach at the second level, I recall on graduation day a few people shocked to find out I was in the bunch of grads for math. We'd be in education classes together and to fulfill some distribution requirement I'd taken a 300 level history class. Some of my peers from the education classes were in that class. They were preparing to be secondary history teachers. They thought I had was as well. Meaning: I'd held my own and impressed them (and the prof) in an upper level class outside my major. If I remember correctly, the course title was something like "The Gilded Age".

I disagree. Those of us who enterd the work force in the 70s are pushing mid 50's to 60+ years old. I started in the work force in 72 I will be 61 in July.

It will take more than few years to ramp up heavy industry. Why you ask. Because you need steel. Ther is no way this country could build ships, And the buildings and machines to put in them without steel. Most of the shipyards are gone they dont exist. So you need to build more. That goes for any building that needs to be built to make tanks, planes or bombs.

yes we have an auto and aircraft industry. As for the auto companys they would be quick to convert to a war output. As for air craft companys, Maybe we have enough. That is a very high skilled work force. Thats also why I beleive we should have the best and baddest fighters in the world. The F-15 is good but not nowdays.

And our steel production is pathetic to what it once was.

It took 4 years to gear up to war production in WW2 and we had all the infrastucture to do it. We do not have that massive infrastructure today.

So I stand by my statment that no way could we fight a war of attriton in this day and age.

Totally agree & if China sees the US ramp those industries up again, they could start calling in the debts you owe them.......

I think you may wrong there Mutt. The US is aware that there are still sufficient nukes held by other countries that "mutually assured destruction" is still on. The US has the toys, but once all the "smart" missiles, drones and other conventional stuff they have stockpiled are used up, they don't have the capacity to replace them at the rate required to actually win.

My bet is that unless the enemy used nukes first, the US would use its nuclear capability force a stalemate.

As yet there is no absolute proof that chemical weapons have been used in Syria. The Syrian regime will not allow US or UK inspectors in to see if the rumours are true, but they will allow Russians in as part of an International team. Given the Russians probably know more about the sorts of chemical weapons the Syrians have at their disposal that is no bad thing.

So the US and UK are claiming that Syria is using nerve gas.....
Haven't we heard that one before ? Will we fall for it again ?

Now the US and the rest of the "Coalition of the Willing" is pulling out of Iraq, Dick Cheney, Halliburton, Serco and co must be feeling the pinch.
