LOL B&ENB http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wars_involving_the_United_States It seems that the US has had "issues" with every country on Earth at some point. I don't recall seeing Iceland on the list but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. So, the rest of the world owes you something for spending more on weapons of destruction and death than you do on everything thing else in your federal budget? No one loves your weapons and those who've become ensnared inside the trap of your "tax dollars" will never get out of debt due to the terms of borrowing. The world owes you nothing. Get real. Maybe he is referring to the time in the mid 20th century when the USA with some help from it's friends saved the world from Hitler and Hirohito. I seem to recall that Australia was on the verge of being invaded when a little fight at Guadacanal and another at Midway Island started the Japanese into their decline. If Japan had waited to attack the USA they might have taken a big chunk of Australia before being beaten back. Without the USA and Britain to worry about Hitler may have even defeated the Soviet Union. What a different and strange world would have emerged from WW II had the USA decided not to get involved in everybody else's war. It was never very likely to have happened that way but I can see from a certain point of view that many countries owe their current existence to the actions of the USA. Otherwise you might all be speaking German and Japanese. Sorry Italy, you were more a hindrance to the Axis than a help. England, with all her Colonial and Commonwealth allies could not have defeated Germany and Japan alone, Churchill knew it, Roosevelt knew it and Hitler knew that he could only win if the USA stayed out of WWII. How many aircraft carriers and the planes to fly off them did Australia build? The best plane to come out of Australia during WWII was the Boomerang and England was on the verge of starvation prior to Dec. 7, 1941. What ever mate guess you forgot that we did have aircraft carrier it was called the Melbourne and if our guys were not behind the lines in the pacific you guys would not have had the intelligence to do a lot of things You might also look up Forrmell in France they love us there we saved there French asses then there is a little battle called the Kokoda trail you might whant to look up And how would you have been able to rearm your forces in the pacific or supply those aircraft carriers with fuel walk 10,000 miles over water or drive 10,000 miles over water I think not You needed us as much as we needed you and for Europe you only entered the war because you would have lost the 1 thing you care about more than feedom MONEY the Brits owed you a few billion I understand and it would have sent you broke And I think it was the same in ww1 too the Money you would have lost |

There is one other thing those jap's would have been in for a shock even if you had been attacked at Perl Haorbour we allraedy had a plan to deal with the jap's it was called the scorched Earth policy and it meat we would have pulled our troops arms and everything else back to a line from Brisbane to Addelade and burt everything behind the line would have been interesting to see how they would have been able to cross 2,000 miles of desert and still rearm and refuel and resupply there forces Plus I believe the Jap's didn't wont to take Australia because of this reason they thought there was nothing there for them and would have been a waste of recorces . WE also had a resonble Navy which would have made things hard for them WE are surrounded be the sea so to think we didn't have a capable navy is nieve to say the least |

According to wikipedia the Melbourne did not go into service until 1955, ten years after WWII ended. The Sydney was Australia's earliest aircraft carrier and it entered service in 1948. I was a history major in college and WWII Naval history is one of my favorite subjects. Only a few days after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor the Japanese managed to sink two of Great Britain's top battleships the Prince of Wales and Repulse. The Australian Navy consisted of these ships Australia declared war on Nazi Germany one hour after the United Kingdom's declaration of war on 3 September 1939. At the onset of war the Royal Australian Navy was relatively modest, even if it was arguably the most combat-ready of the three services. Major units included:[27] two heavy cruisers; Australia and Canberra, both carried 8-inch (203 mm) guns and had entered service in the 1920s three modern light cruisers; Hobart, Perth, and Sydney, which mounted 6-inch (152 mm) guns the older cruiser Adelaide four sloops, Parramatta, Swan, Warrego, and Yarra; although only Swan and Yarra were in commission five V-class destroyers a variety of support and ancillary craft These ships were not even capable of fighting off just one of Japan's battle fleets. But let me state I have no axe to grind with Australia or it's countrymen. They served with distinction in WWII alongside their American allies and I do not share the opinion of the original poster in this thread. Hey Bob, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Aussies check the Japs in Papua New Guinea without any assistance from the Yanks? Also, when the Japs kicked them out of the Philippines, where did MacArthur go - Pearl Harbour or maybe New York? Britain & Australia, as well as other allies kept the fight going long enough for the Yanks to get embroiled & as far as Europe was concerned, all they provided there was supplies as all the allied troops outnumbered the troops the US provided for the ETO. Check out "The Overlanders" a dramatized version of real events which showed the determination of the Aussies - the Japanese would not have had an easy task in taking Australia & doubt that they could have achieved it in the 1st place. True, no allied side could have won the war on their own, but the continuing B/S that America saved our asses is totally stale! |

True, no allied side could have won the war on their own, but the continuing B/S that America saved our asses is totally stale! Tell me where you would have built the ships, tanks and airplanes to do it? Tucked just inside the back cover of my copy of Fahey's The Ships and Aircraft of the United States Fleet, War Edition, is a pencil copy with a black restricted stamp on it, with the list of the names of 50 destroyers that dear Mom wrote out when she worked for the Navy Department in DC. |

I was an education major in college with math and history as my primary study areas. As I am and was handicapped after graduation I had a difficult time finding a teaching position and the one that I did find was set up for me to fail. Only then did I fall back on my drafting skills to get my first job in the civil engineering field where I stayed until five years ago. Does that explain my comments to your satisfaction, Sarge? True, no allied side could have won the war on their own, but the continuing B/S that America saved our asses is totally stale! They wouldn't by chance be the 50 WWIobsolete tincans you graciously lent us? As for building them...let's see....Belfast for one, the Clyde for 2, not many Jerries attacked north of the border & those that did got a bloodied nose for their troubles. It looks like that 1940's quote was & still is very apt! Overpaid, oversexed & over here! |
