Does anybody know if I can just install BOINC 6.10.60 over BOINC 6.12.34? This actually seems to be an early version of V7 and I know this can't be easily done from V7 because of changes in some files. I guess I'm hoping that 6.12 is enough of a V6 version that the problem won't arise! If it can't be done, are there any real advantages of BOINC V7 over BOINC V6.10.60? Should I just bite the bullet and go to V7? Background: I was trying to set some config options and a couple that I was interested in were in 6.12.34 so I stupidly upgraded to that, thinking it was just a standard V6 release. (You shouldn't decide to upgrade software at 3 a.m. after a very long day, sigh!). As this version is a stupider version of V7 it is killing me with the long download backoffs. This is on my work PC where we access the internet through our own proxy servers and I haven't been able (yet) to persuade our IT department to implement the TCP fix to solve download issues. So what I would really like to do is revert back to BOINC 6.10.60, where I at least get downloads after some time. BTW I'm on Win7 64. Rick |

BOINC 6.13 is an early (beta) range of BOINC 7.0. All of BOINC 6.12 is 6.12 All of BOINC 6 is backward compatible with earlier versions of 6. The back-off in BOINC 7 is different again from that in 6.10 and 6.12 But it's also there for a reason, so all of us don't DDoS the servers. And with the bandwidth here already stressed way beyond the limit, it happens at times that we all are backed off on downloads and uploads, especially now with the project being off line for 3 days starting tomorrow. |

Thanks. I understand about the need for backoffs and in 6.10.30 I just basically treated BOINC as a run and forget application without worrying about the backoffs. However the individual task and, especially, project backoff times in BOINC 6.12.34 seem unreasonable. BTW the reason I thought that this version was basically an early V7 was because the GUI had changed. Rick |

BTW the reason I thought that this version was basically an early V7 was because the GUI had changed. 6.12 had a new advanced GUI, with the separate Messages window. BOINC 7.0 has a new Simple GUI and OpenCL support. And both have a crap load of other extras, bug fixes and things added. To see the main differences, look no further than http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/VersionHistory. We're on the brink of releasing a new BOINC 7.0, really any day now, if us testers can stop finding new problems popping up. |
