lets see about this.... urls to sources are included gasoline use in 2010 The estimated use by the US Department of Energy was estimated at 138 billion gallons in 2011 (couldn't exact figures for 2012) 12,360,000,000 bushels was the corn crop http://www.agmrc.org/commodities__products/grains__oilseeds/corn_grain/ ok using the 2.77 gallons of ethanol produced per bushel of corn stat from here www.fapri.missouri.edu/outreach/publications/2006/biofuelconversions.pdf 12.36 billion / 2.77 = 4,462,093,862.815884 so even if we converted all our corn production to ethanol we fall FAR short of what we need now adding in domestic oil production in 2012 the usa produced 2,369,484,000 barrels of oil http://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/pet_crd_crpdn_adc_mbbl_a.htm 43 gallons of motor gasoline per barrel 2,369,484,000 x 43 = 101,887,812,000 so.... 101,887,812,000 + 4,462,093,862 = 106,349,905,862 we still fall short but at least these numbers show that with the right mentality and the right managemt it is doable |

lets see about this.... From what I see, from this side of the pond, not having visited for a few years, is that if people would buy newer vehicles there would be quite a saving. Wiki -Age of vehicles in operation says "The study found that of vehicles in operation in the US, 38.3% were older than ten years, 22.3% were between seven and ten years old, 25.8% were between three and six years old and 13.5% were less than two years old." Also nearly everywhere people are running around in trucks and SUV's and the like without needing them. Some of those, even the new ones, struggle to do 20mpg, so swapping to a more suitable vehicle that would probably do 35mpg or greater would cover the shortfall. P.S. I've URL'd the links for you. Please next time just highlight the links and hit the URL button above, it makes it easier than cutting and pasting. |

that is vary interesting but do remember that gain alcohol only has about half the Btu's of gasoline. though it does a higher cetane rating and burns cooler so it is better for the motor but may take twice as much fuel. |

Also something real DANG silly about burning what you eat. Octane not centane. Must not conflict resolve by suggesting that someone should go sit on an ice pick... |

Two out of three. Cetane is the measure used for diesel fuels -hence the comment about "OK for some of us". Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Two out of three. If you want more pop in that cylinder you use natural gas or propane. Must not conflict resolve by suggesting that someone should go sit on an ice pick... |
