Regarding the potential for government take over -- true enough -- if people actually became aware what has gone on with the distribution of wealth (and power) over the past 30 years (there are a lot of reasons for this, not simply a case of a tax system which protects the assets of the very wealthy -- that's one aspect, but there are clearly others), there is an increased possibility of some real reaction (which I suspect in this country would come from the far better armed extreme right wing than from the largely moribund left wing). I see where Cypress didn't get a little 10% haircut on wealth passed and now is looking for a bigger almost 25% haircut on wealth. This is a very clear and obvious redistribution of wealth. But they couldn't get the little one passed even though it only hit small people at less than 5%. It is plainly obvious that people today have a "charge it" mentality and no idea that the bill is eventually going to come due and they have to pay it; no one else is going to pick up the tab. It is also obvious that redistribution of wealth doesn't go down well when it is their wealth. The failure of many who talk about distribution disparity to realize there is a significant difference between wealth and income and how people view them when they are the subject of a haircut to redistribute bothers me. But then again, thinking has gone out the window. As to a reaction from the right, it is amazing how many people are on the right when it is their wallet that is about to be picked by the government tax man. Yes, the reaction will come from the right but not necessarily whom you expect because some 0/1 will actually get some bill through with 0/1 thought process. |

Gary, there there was an interesting article in the current Foreign Affairs by Jerry Muller -- Capitalism and Inequality. Subtitle -- what the Right and the Left Get Wrong. Concluding paragraph: The challenge for government policy in the advanced capitalist world is how to maintain a rate of economic dynamism that will provide increasing benefits for all while still managing to pay for the social welfare programs required to make citizens' lives bearable under conditions on increasing inequality and insecurity. A useful starting point might be the rejection of both the politics of privilege and the politics of resentment and the adoption of a clear-eyed view of what capitalism actually involves, as opposed to the idealization of its worshipers and the demonization of its critics. |

Barry, if the right wing would stop believing in the fantasy world as described by Ayn Rand, that would be a start. As for the bleeding heart liberals they need to understand basic cash flow management for the long term. IMO, most in the middle have not realized they are getting raped. |

Gary I take it you've cross-posted a comment from one of the victims <smile> of my twit filter... Yes, this is the one that posts the occasionally riotous posts that I occasionally read when I want a hearty belly laugh. At least I know this one isn't the slightest bit serious in what he posts. |

I'm straight up serious about laissez faire capitalism with the right of tariffs only for dumping by other Countries. Ya, that's me. Must not conflict resolve by suggesting that someone should go sit on an ice pick... |

There is an interesting video that has been making its rounds regarding wealth. A survey was made of 5000 people seeking opinions regarding 'ideal' wealth distribution and their belief of current wealth distribution. The findings were telling. People want to see more equitable distribution of wealth then they believe currently exists. But their belief of actual distribution is far less unbalanced and top heavy as the actual distribution of wealth. Along these lines your comment about 'most in the middle not realizing they are getting raped' is quite apt. Though I'd note that most folks in the middle seem to believe that our entitlements distribute significantly more wealth to the bottom 20% to 40% then is the case. Both of those misunderstandings reflect the propaganda success of the Teapublican Party (but also, to some degree the failure of the Democratic Party to present the distribution facts clearly and in a way that even Americans can understand, but also to actually develop an approach that will deal with the concentration of wealth while raising wealth generally). Barry, if the right wing would stop believing in the fantasy world as described by Ayn Rand, that would be a start. As for the bleeding heart liberals they need to understand basic cash flow management for the long term. IMO, most in the middle have not realized they are getting raped. |

It is The Smart Ones, The Educated Ones, The Intelligensia, The Brainiacs, The Aristocracy Of The Mind Ones, who Are To Be Feared/Not Trusted. Given those here you think are the brainiacs, now you think we're in control? Man, what a hoot and a holla. Blog for it. |

P.S.-if the "ads" posted in 2008 were anywhere near close, then those in control are not brainiacs at all. They are barely above average. So think again about how they got into positions of power, and how the rest you railed against are nearly as powerless as the rest you lament. |

Gary, you and I tend to agree a lot -- even though I characterize myself as 'center-left' and would not assail you with that characterization. <smile> Dang it, I come here to GET AWAY from the math, and then Gary has to fire a missile at right angles to reality. |
