What's Worked, And What Hasn't, In Gun-Loving Switzerland. Ah. Another link. Please, click my link even though I've said pretty much nothing about it. Then talk about it, so I can claim you didn't really read it. Because my whole point is to shut you up. My response? Go write a blog. I hope no one responds to your latest thread after this one. Believe whatever you like about my reasons for saying this. They are clear to all others. |

What's Worked, And What Hasn't, In Gun-Loving Switzerland. Why do people write smouldering emails (i.e. not quite a flame) ? So you don't like the OP's politics? That is no reason to be abusive or post a reply that doesn't even relate to the post in question. S(AS)C/P, Did YOU actually click the link and read the story ? Or are just exhibiting your dislike for ID ? The story, which comes from NPR and not some looney ultra right web site, makes some valid comparisons between the US and Switzerland and asks the question, that despite a similar level of gun ownership, why is the incidence of gun related violence much lower in Switzerland than the US? It does not even back ID's view of the world or gun control. Once again the comments on the article are in some ways more informative than the article itself. T.A. |

What has worked in Switzerland, that hasn't in the US, is the idea of a militia. Switzerland conscripts all healthy young men. Trains the correctly and then at the end of the conscription period sends them home with their weapon and from there on they are part of the militia. They are now getting into the idea of storing the ammunition out of the homes and into a safe local arsenal. And as the stats tell us, this does cause more gun related incidents that the remainder of Europe, but nowhere near the levels of the US. Which shows us that have ready access to weapons is not a good thing. |

By all means, lets ban showers in our homes. At the rate people die by slipping in them such a ban is really needed. Must not conflict resolve by suggesting that someone should go sit on an ice pick... |

I assume this is in response to my posting. If so I do wish you would be so polite as to either reply or quote so that we know. You will note that in this case I replied to your posting. And in response to what you wrote. When are you going to start thinking before posting. If we were to ban all things that cause injuries, then we would be back into the stone age rapidly. Think about it you ban all tools, anything that is used for cutting or hammering, all climbing equipment, like ladders and scafolding, so that in the end we would be all living in tents, and not having any tools to hunt with, or to use to grow crops, etc. etc. |

You're on my ignore list for a reason. If I was talking to you Id let you know. I put a lot of thinking into my posts here. Now I'm talking to you... A firearm is just another tool to me that can also be used for sport and defence. It just happens to be a multi-use tool. More people, by the way, die of misuse of tools other then the firearm then the firearm itself. Must not conflict resolve by suggesting that someone should go sit on an ice pick... |

So in loosing the arguments you just choose to ignore me. As in the Ummm, WoW! thread. Nice to see your true colours as a coward are displayed. |

I ignored you long before the Ummm, WoW thread. I sure you know that. I'll get back to that as soon as I get back to that. As for 'coward'--we shall see in due time. Is there a reason you have not addressed the point of topic on this thread? Must not conflict resolve by suggesting that someone should go sit on an ice pick... |

.....A firearm is just another tool to me that can also be used for sport and defence. It just happens to be a multi-use tool. More people, by the way, die of misuse of tools other then the firearm then the firearm itself. The problem with this argument is, that when a person dies through the misuse of a tool, it is usually only the operator of that tool that gets killed or injured. It also ignores the fact that if a "tool" is potentially dangerous to others there are restrictions on their use and mandatory safety procedures to be followed. e.g. barricades and warning signs have to be erected, the user has to be certified, there is a restriction on how close onlookers can be to the user, etc. etc. Yet when similar restrictions are proposed for firearms, which is a "tool" similar to a nail gun but much more lethal, the uproar starts. I have yet to see someone take an electric drill to the top of a building and use it to randomly kill complete strangers a hundred yards away. T.A. Edited for clarity. |

A firearm is just another tool to me that can also be used for sport and defence..... You neglect the fact that a firearm is one of the few tools that can be easily used for offence. It is this use (by a lunatic fringe) that is giving firearms a bad name. T.A. |

A firearm is just another tool to me that can also be used for sport and defence..... i can pick up an axe, knife, gun, hammer or even a very large cresent wrench all of which i own and use any of them just as easily for offence. all the gun does is make it less up close and personal. |

A firearm is just another tool to me that can also be used for sport and defence..... +1 The last ax, knife, hammer and or wrench did not come with a warning label. As a matter of fact I just picked up another AR-15 from my FFL dealer and it didn't come with a warning label either. LOL, the last circular saw I bought came with a warning label as long as my arm! i can pick up an axe, knife, gun, hammer or even a very large cresent wrench all of which i own and use any of them just as easily for offence. all the gun does is make it less up close and personal. Which is exactly the point. If someone attacks with an axe, knife, hammer or crescent wrench, the intended victim has a chance to escape or fight back and defend themselves, by either grabbing a similar weapon or something to use as a shield. The fact that it is "up close and personal" also makes the assailant more thoughtful as to whether they will actually attack or not. This is why you don't hear of many random attacks with such things. They are usually used in "crimes of passion". Firearms however, make it totally impersonal, especially when firing from a distance, and way too easy for some nutcase who is out to make a name for themselves. T.A. Edited: |

A saw has less firepower than a semi-auto firearm. |

If some nut case wants to kill someone, not having access to a gun wont stop them from hurting or killing someone. However if some nutcase want to try hurting me or someone i care about, me having a gun can prevent that much better then an axe, knife, hammer, wrench, or even a circular saw. "Forget the dog, Beware the owner" and yes i have shot someone breaking into my place, and luckily it was long enough ago that the media didn't blame me for shooting the poor misunderstood felon that broke into my place at 1am. |
