Does anyone know why my BOINC manager is saying this? Can't connect? Is something going on that I should know about? Thank you! |

Does anyone know why my BOINC manager is saying this? Can't connect? Is something going on that I should know about? Had hoped someone would come along with the answer by now, but I'd suggest rebooting the computer to see if that fixes it. If not, may need more involved steps. There's a similar problem and some comments in this thread. Edit: forgot to say welcome to the project! Fred, check your link..it runs to a user, not a thread....... Oops, my mistake. Meant this post and other comments. Not much there, though. I've also had a mysterious instance of this in the past couple of days. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=71170&postid=1348652 Another Fred Support SETI@home when you search the Web with GoodSearch or shop online with GoodShop. |

Periodically I have the BOINC manager GUI stop communicating with the rest of the BOINC system. The solution I use is to: Close the manager GUI Right mouse click on the BOINC icon in the task bar and select "exit", a dialog box pops up, tick the "Stop running science applications" option and then press "OK". This will stop the science applications running for a short time. Wait a few seconds for the science applications to stop, and restart the BOINC manager. Within a few seconds of the manager GUI opening you should see the science applications task list appear, and then start running (sometimes there is a delay if BOINC decides it needs to run benchmark calibration) To make life simple for me, I've got a shortcut to BOINC on my desktop so I don't have to go digging for it.... The problem also crops up if the client (boinc.exe in your task manager) is too busy to talk to the manager. That can happen when e.g. it's waiting for some net related responses or when AntiVirus (AV) programs are interfering. Make sure the boinc program and data directories are excluded from your AV. Check in task manager if boinc.exe is running. If it is and the Manager isn't - kill boinc.exe in the task manager, wait a little and restart the manager - that should restart boinc.exe as well. In theory a restarted manager should pick up the running instance of boinc.exe but sometimes it just fails to do so, in which case manually killing the boinc.exe can help. NB the 'correct' way to do this is to issue 'boinccmd --quit' from a console [if necessary from the boinc program dir], so boinc can gracefully shut down and write client_state.xml. If you just kill it you can lose a couple minutes (or hours depending on app) of crunching. Of course a clean reboot should accomplish the same. hhhmmmmm interesting.when you go to the 'tasks' tab in boinic there are no tasks there..........i used to run seti and Einstein@home.. now these tasks have vanished!!!!! its like the whole thing was reset to default or something? What does the Event Log say? If the manager is not connected to the client, it doesn't know about what projects or tasks are running. In standard operation when stopping and restarting boinc, you will notice that it takes a moment or two for the task list to populate. That's the time between the manager starting and getting information from the client. A normal uninstall/reinstall will not touch your data directory - you continue where you left off. Your credits are not stored locally but on the server. If you completely wipe the boinc directories and start (as if it was a new host) on project attach/add you will be asked if you are a new or a returning user. A new user is prompted to supply an email address and a password (double checked). A returning user is asked for the same email address and the password used (same as for your account here). The host is then attached to the already exsisting account - no credits lost. You may get a new host ID though. A person who won't read has no advantage over one who can't read. (Mark Twain) |
