I just joined the other day, so if this questions already been asked, and dealt with, please don't howl "Read the FAQs Newbie"

When I've been online for a short time a work unit is sometimes uploaded. The thing that puzzles me is that even though I'm connected, and the manager reads "Download: Active" nothing is sometimes uploaded to my computer for about twenty seconds, and the speed reads 0.00 KBs.

First,
Welcome to the Cafe, this is an area for relaxation, the place you really should be asking your question is "Number Crunching". But since you are here I'll give you a quick answer to get you started.

There have been quite a few problems with the servers not working as well as one would hope, and a solution has been posted which works pretty well, it involves either manually changing a couple of entries in the registry, or using a utility to do the changes for you. I'm not going to attempt to explain further than that (in case I get the details wrong, which would be a "bad thing"), but if you look for the two threads in Number Crunching that titled along the lines "Windows TCP solution" you will find the details of what to do.

Thanks for the answer. I won't muck about with the registry - thats what did in one of my previous computers. It seems the more Microsoft changes things the more dangerous they become. I'm going to steer clear of the registry, and let it do what its doing. If it works...it works.

Confirmed compu-coward.

And I agree... Pluto is a planet.

Welsome to the project. Just a bit more information. The project's access to the internet for uploads and downloads is limited to 100 Mbps, and is almost always congested. This graph shows the current status. Slow speeds are the norm for all of us. The info that Rob pointed you to will improve the reliability of the transfers, but won't help on the speed.
