Argentina's Jorge Mario Bergoglio elected Pope Francis Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been elected the Catholic Church's Pope, taking the name Francis. Appearing on a balcony over St Peter's Square in Rome, he asked the faithful to pray for him, with cheers erupting as he gave a blessing. The 76-year-old from Buenos Aires is the first Latin American and the first Jesuit to be pontiff. Messages of goodwill have poured in from around the world. The Pope's inaugural Mass will be next Tuesday. I wish him the best! |

Tread carefully Sirius, religion and politics don't mix. The Mail ought to know better as well. Probably true that religion and politics don't mix, but they do keep getting mixed up. Heads of most religions cannot out of politics and politicians either embrace religion wholeheartedly of reject it. And the press keeps turning the handle, seems like the Guardian has stepped in already. Pope Francis: questions remain over his role during Argentina's dictatorship Jorge Bergoglio was head of the Jesuit order in the 1970s when the church backed military government and called for patriotism |

;-) He is a Franciscan. And he took the name Francis. He'll clean up the Church. :-)! These facts so far show that is his mandate. We'll have to see who he appoints around him to gather what the Pontiff has in mind. Must not conflict resolve by suggesting that someone should go sit on an ice pick... |

Clean it up? Really? Your speculations are very, very silly! World population 100 years ago where under a billion. About 800 million. #4)No messages intended to annoy or antagonize other people, or to hijack a thread. Must not conflict resolve by suggesting that someone should go sit on an ice pick... |

the name Francis appears to be a nod to the other order of preists In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

the name Francis appears to be a nod to the other order of preists There are two theories as to which "St. Francis" decide to choose, most obvious to the man is the street is St Francis of Assisi, but there is another, one of the "founders" of the Jesuits was St. Francis Xavier. Both held very similar views about helping the poor, looking after the needy, living lives of simplicity and so on. Indeed when you look at the life style of Pope Francis you can see immediate parallels to both. I would really like to know which he chose, or perhaps its a combination of the two?
