yes you see the textile threads of the canvas, but if it was needlepoint each thread bit would be one colour. Like with a screen - close up you would see the pixels, and it only coalesces into a picture from further away.

on that pic colours have a much finer resolution than the supporting material -> paint on coarse canvas.
