Message 1345166 - Posted: 11 Mar 2013, 1:12:01 UTC

Hello! I have spent sometime looking online to try and fix this issue, but to no luck! I am trying to get the cool SETI screensaver to come up (like the one I saw on the Science Channel)but instead all I get is this Boinic Logo thing moving around. I am using windows 7 and had no issues with install. I only have one project selected, the SETI home one. Please help!

The Seti screensaver uses OpenGL on the videocard, therefore the videocard needs to have drivers installed with OpenGL enabled. The drivers installed by Windows don't have OpenGL, you'll have to install the drivers from the GPU's manufacturer.

Then there's the thing that the graphics/screen saver only runs on CPU tasks, not on GPU tasks. Since your computers are hidden, we can't see if you run things on the GPU or only on the CPU.

If you run work on the GPU, then that counts for not seeing the Seti screen saver, as the GPU applications lack the necessary graphics application.

Hey guys, ever since I ran lunatics it seems like I can't ever get the screensaver to show that pretty graph. All the screen saver does nowadays is list the task I'm crunching and the time remaining / percent done. Then the screen saver will switch to a view of my account details (username, team name, RAC, total credit, and so-forth). How can I get the graph back?

The lunatics applications are built for speed, and as such do not support the screen saver.

Exit BOINC completely.
Delete the app_info.xml file in your \Programdata\BOINC\Projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\ directory.
Restart BOINC.
Reset the project.

Resetting the project will lose all work presently in cache, plus any work already finished but waiting to be uploaded or be reported. So make sure to set No New Tasks, then run the cache down first, and upload & report all work before you do so.

Message 1359121 - Posted: 20 Apr 2013, 23:50:51 UTC - in response to Message 1352479.

Hi, 1352479,

I have been trying to get my purdy graph-animation back for YEARS now (no lunatics involved)....
Not the most urgent issue (anywhere), but I did like to watch that display while my thoughts wandered.

I've tried (most of) these seven options, but I can't allow myself to try every possible combination,
since I have NO IDEA what several of them MEAN:

Use CPU
Use ATI GPU
Use NVIDIA GPU

"Run only the selected applications"
SETI@home Enhanced
Astropulse v505
SETI@home v7
AstroPulse v6

Thank you,
993760 ... (Lorraine)

PS, why/when did StarMap.exe stop working w/ Seti@home?
(another chance to dream)
PPS, hope they're respecting hard returns here, or my whole note is gibberish.

I want the SETI@home rainbow animated "graph" display
back again as my screen-saver (it was so soothing); but I can't find how!
Can anyone help me?
thx

To be able to see the screen saver or graphics there's a requirement that your videocard can do OpenGL (not to be confused with OpenCL, which is something different). This can only be gotten by installing drivers made by the manufacturer of the graphics processor on the videocard. In this case Intel, Nvidia or ATI.

But since some versions ago, BOINC is also capable of doing calculations on this graphics processor. The science application that does calculations on the GPU does not come with a graphics application (for technical reasons), so whenever the screen saver would kick in while such a GPU task runs, you'll only see the default BOINC screen saver.

To be able to do the calculations on the GPU, you also need drivers from the graphics processor manufacturer.

And then there's the thing that not all applications at Seti come with a graphics application. As far as I know, only Seti-Enhanced on the CPU does so. Not Astropulse v6, not Seti_Enhanced on the GPU (as explained above).

If you do not want to do calculations on the GPU, you set the project to:
Use CPU -> Yes.
Use ATI GPU -> No.
Use Nvidia GPU -> No.

And Run the selected applications:
Seti Enhanced -> Yes.
Astropulse v505 -> No (it's deprecated).
Seti@Home v7 -> Yes (once upon a time it'll get out of testing to a computer near you).
Astropulse v6 -> No (best not stress your dual CPU too much, and APs are bitches).

Also set If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications? to No!!

Starmap is a third party application, I don't know anything about it. If there was no version made that works together with BOINC, it's probably broken since 2005 when Seti made the switch to BOINC. But you can check http://boinc.berkeley.edu/addons.php for a suitable similar program that will be able to work with BOINC.

Sorry that my post is technical, it's difficult to explain all this without sounding like this. If you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask. I especially haven't written anything about how you can find out what kind of graphics processor you have, so as not to overwhelm you too much. :-)

Same problem here ... sigh ...
I tried to download a new driver from NVIDIA, but the screensaver still does not work!

Perhaps the task that was active was running on the GPU, and as I already explained in the post previous to yours, the GPU applications do not come with a graphics application, thus no screen saver. It'll only be available with the Seti Enhanced 6.03 CPU application.

If you're sure that was the one that was running, you'll have to be more eloquent in describing what you see (or make pictures!!)
