Credits are the new thing from BOINC. You get a variable amount of credits for each task that you return correctly.

The old SetiClassic work unit count was never translated to credits, as that was impossible, as back then both quick tasks and slow tasks would just yield the count of 1 when finished. Impossible to figure out how many quick ones you had and how many slow ones. So they weren't translated, and just left as a memento on your account. Just like a sports year will start from zero every year.

Ah, I was a bit upset that all my previous work counts for naught until you mentioned the sports analogy...not I completely understand. :)

But unlike a sports year, you retain your "classic" score forever, and your credits just keep mounting up.

A little background as to why the change.
The Classic system only worked when there was one project, so when "BOINC" was introduced, with the potential for a large number of projects there was a need for a standardised scoring system to allow you to add up all the work you do across all prjects. And so the "Credit" system was born.
"But why not transfer all my Classic score into credits"? Simple answer, there were some very bad boys and girls out there who found ways to grossly artificially enhance their score....
