Half a dollar was 2s-6d (half crown) in the good old days when we got four to the £ :-) You got one of them for your birthday, you were rich! Ummmmm, there were 8 half crowns to the pound. Remember £1 = 20s. |

A welcome return to real money, and what it could buy. The half dollar hair cut was one eight of a UKpound, and petrol was offered at 5 gallons (UK gallon @ 4.55litres) per UKpound. So, in those days I ... It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |

Quite right too John, bring back the Tanner! I'd love a white fiver to frame and put on the wall, but not at £250. Even the blue ten bob notes are now worth £40. Not to the US or Canada I'd think, as we all drive on the right, of course there is Australia or Japan, both drive on the left... So that's how the people of the sunken continental fragment drive(New Zealand), I wasn't sure, thanks. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

USA drives on the right It turns out zealandia ranges as far north as Samoa and the Salomon Islands, some sunken continent and it sort of resembles the UK too, weird. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Any part of the world which was at some time part of the British Empire is left hand and any part colonised by the French is right hand. Them French got a lot of explaining to do :-) Pakistan? Now I'll have to check <what was the name of the first Bond flick with Timothy Dalton?>. There's a scene where he and the girl are in the Russian equivalent of a Humvee and suddenly come to a road with a sign saying how far it is to Karachi. He says he knows a great restaurant in Karachi and sets off... on the right side if I remember correctly. But he's a Brit (so's the actor, if it was him driving in that shot) and it's a left drive country (which he would know, being James Bond), so he should have driven on the left. Never mind the American movie audience. Anyway, to make another movie reference: Kevin Klein in A Fish called Wanda - @$$hoooolllle! In many "third world" countries there are two sides to the road "right" and "wrong" - the "right" has lots of potholes, and the "wrong" has even more potholes... Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

It surprises me he got that old, considering the daredevil he was... He broke 433 bones in His lifetime, I've only broke one and that just about killed Me... The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

It surprises me he got that old, considering the daredevil he was... My one broken bone (right arm just above the wrist) didn't kill me, but the concrete slab I broke it on would have if it had been my head instead. I've broken a few bones over the years. But my most painful injury was when doing ankle sweeps, in Judo, and catching my big toe on a slight rise in the mat. The toe folds under the foot and I then stand on it. The large toe comes up black, with a tapering blue tinge up to the foot ... It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |

It surprises me he got that old, considering the daredevil he was... I only broke My lower left leg and dislocated My right hip joint in 2002, which required 3 titanium screws during a 2 hour surgery, which meant moving and disturbing My left ankle joint, afterwards I got no rehab(a for profit hospital), I haven't been able to walk as far ever since and I gained weight as a result & red rashes, complicating matters is My pre-existing low output thyroid gland, that weight gain lead to problems with My right knee joint when going up and down steps, although I'm able to use that joint again after not climbing or descending steps for a while, it's very stiff now, but not painful at least. I have a few other problems, but their like the thyroid, endemic to Me. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

Any part of the world which was at some time part of the British Empire is left hand and any part colonised by the French is right hand. Them French got a lot of explaining to do :-) Sorry Chris, but the message in that link has "arranged" history to fit their theory. The original 13 United States were all former British colonies. 3 of the 4 original Canadian provinces were ex-British colonies. The French influence in North America started small, and got smaller with time. It was virtually zero by the time Napoleon started to get uppity. The whole right versus left thing has mostly been accidental in the past, IMHO. Today the majority rules, and things are changing (like in former British colonies like Ghana, Nigeria and Sierra Leone that have all switched from left to right). Just an observation: China drives on the right, India drives on the left. It will be interesting to see who wins out in the long run. |

I can't see the UK ever switching to driving on the right. If they try, i'm voting UKIP! Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |
