A lot of the 60's bands are still going believe it or not, and some are celebrating 50 years in the business. The Strolling Bones.... er..uh.. Rolling Stones... come to mind. |

A lot of the 60's bands are still going believe it or not, and some are celebrating 50 years in the business. Although usually with only 1 or 2 of the original line up. I've seen Status Quo twice live at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon in the last couple of years, and the Searchers as well. Believe me Vic, all those guys can still belt it out. Even Hank Marvin of the Shadows did a UK solo tour a while ago which I saw. They sign autographs after the show, and I've shaken hands with them. Amazing .... I wouldn't doubt it, I've heard the groups from the 60's or in the case of at least one, their individual members that are in other bands. Swinging London of the 60’s. I remember Wardour Street and the Soho clubs like Tiles, Marquee Club, Scotch and Whiskey A-Go-Go to name just a few. Saw and danced to most the biggies of the day for as little as ten bob. Now that was a time to be. And how much for a Stone’s concert ticket these days? GAWD!! ... |

All this reminiscing suddenly make me think of this I was there from Friday night till Sunday night, through several torrential downpours but what an experience. |

I saw Alice Cooper (the real one) in a church hall in a small village called Mickleton, playing to about 200 people. And the strange thing is, it was only two months ago. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

Well at least Alice is around, of course how many people today even know of the other Cooper, that is Gary Cooper? The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

That little boosted A series engine was a gem for the car it pulled, the classic Mini.. No wonder the Mini won the Le Man 24, but I cannot remember when (during the mid to later 1960s I presume?). It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |

That's quite a little car, not much smaller than My Escort, but then I saw one in the area recently. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

No, that's a REAL mini - only 10ft long, weighing in at about .75ton. You probably saw one of the BMW "pretend" minis, which is a much bigger car (something like 12ft long, and weighing in at about 1.25ton). The last real mini I drove had over 150bhp (at the tyres) - as you can imagine it was "quite rapid", especially on narrow twisty lanes, where third gear, full right boot and hold tight was the order of the day... Bernie's picture is of a 1275GT, single carb, about 70BHP. Quick, but not fast, but did have better brakes than the earlier Cooper S, which had a similar engine, twin carbs and a bit more power (but worse brakes...) I don't have any pics of the one I drove, but it was a "proper" mini shape (the "curvy" front end as in John's picture) rather than the "clubman" of Bernie's photo. It was named "Spirit of 'S'" - the owner believed that is what would have happened to the car if development had continued for another few years, but he got carried away somewhat in the process - I doubt that the radiator would have ended up in the boot... ... It was named "Spirit of 'S'" ... I believe I once heard about that car. Sammy the Snail used to drive it and painted a big "S" on the side. One day he took the car to France and was driving really fast down one of those long, straight avenues, when he passed a couple of gendarmes. One turned to the other and said: "Wow, did you see that S-car go?" |

I remember a friend, when I was oh, so young, who bought a Morris Minor (the 1098cc version). He threw away the "A" seried engine, modified the bulkhead, moved the radiator out 18" in front of the grill and shoehorned in a Ford Zephyr 2.5 litre six cylinder engine in. The machine went like stink on the straights but was crap on corners. Morris Minor ... The six cylinder engine came from one of these ... It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |
