Go to the first comment on this thread and read it, http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=71002&sort_style=6&start=0. My machines are all W7, so I just used TCP Optimiser instead of doing the registry tweak. I could have done either but I just wanted to see how TCP Otimiser worked.

Me, i just went for the command line option.
It did the job ( I later manually changed the value to 3, but it made little difference- the command line as it was made all the difference).

Open a command prompt as administrator,

netsh int tcp set heuristics enabled (press enter)
netsh int tcp set global timestamps=enable (press enter)

Exit the command pronpt.

And make sure to reboot afterwards.

There's an easier command line option, which does it all in one go and doesn't need any editing afterwards.

It did the job ...

Open a command prompt as administrator,

REG ADD "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters" /v "Tcp1323Opts" /t REG_DWORD /d 3 /f

Exit the command pronpt.

And make sure to reboot afterwards.

Scheduled Outage

Description: As part of network upgrades for the Hill, IST staff will be doing an extensive reworking of the fiber optics serving Botanical Gardens, Lawrence Hall of Science and Space Sciences Lab. Due to the time intensive nature of the work, this is an overnight outage starting at 5:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 19th, and concluding no later than 8:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 20th. This outage will disable all network connectivity for these locations, as well as PBX phone service.

Looks good to me.

Does this one work in XP Pro?

And is there any chance it will mess with my radioreference.com (now broadcastify.com) feed?

Yes, it works with XP. My own machines are XP Home, but at that level they aren't very different.

I know nothing about radio reference or broadcast feeds, so I can't comment. But if those feeds are available to Linux users, then this change shouldn't affect them: all we're doing is turning on an internet standard that Linux has enabled by default for years. And since it's a single registry value, you can very easily make a note of the current state of play beforehand, and restore it if it doesn't work for you.

If it does cause something else not to work correctly you can always remove it.

I suggested looking just in case the key was already present, and had a value different from zero (default, do nothing) or 3 (what we're recommending for SETI).

While they are doing that 'extensive reworking of the fiber optics', have them toss a chuck of bandwidth at Seti....LOL.

And I would 'hope' that da boyz in da lab might skip today's scheduled outage, since they could do that in the morning before coming back online.

We shall see.

Well, they went down on schedule. Finished pretty quickly and the project seems to running well - I'm back to limits without intervention and still have almost 4 hours before the next shutdown. I'll have to run a B project for part of the overnight outage due to the duration, but that's no big deal..

It was a quick 1 today so I wonder if they have a bit of work planned while the connection is down.

Cheers.

It was like magic...

I did this on my Win7 box last week. About 25 minutes ago, I checked in on it and found a download that was at 6% after over 7 minutes. As I watched, it went into backoff. I hit retry and after a few seconds it went through steadily. Then a couple more started and finished decently. But why did that one go to backoff? How many others have done it without me noticing?

Because it's Tuesday.

And it doesn't matter how many - the first backoff is short enough that it'll retry by itself before it matters.

For forums without any form of network, it's weird to see them up. I would've expected both these and the BOINC forums to be unavailable, but albeit slow, they are available.

So it only truly affects uploads and downloads then.
