Sorry, rarly onlien at weekends.

This tool would have come in handy for large families or families with small children and then probably seen use in the mornings and at bedtime.

same reason chemists use 'boiling chips' - you provide a large measure of additional surface for small bubbles of steam to form continously instead of big bubbles in bursts.
