The inside is hollow but there is no opening at the left hand end.

One always opens the red wine before bringing it to the table, which these days probably means in the kitchen....

One always opens red wine before serving at table because it it allows the wine to breathe, and slowly come in contact with the air, aerating the wine and making its complex aromas and flavors come to life. Red wine should be served at 62˚F (17˚ C) i.e. nominal room temperature. For even better results the wine should be previously decanted.

Although, I suppose one COULD use this utensil for serving most anything, it's specific design is:

not for serving waffles,

not for serving ice cream slices,

not for serving cake slices,

not for serving toast,

and not for serving petit fours. (Insert gloating smile here!)

This tool is a fussy little thing and in my defense, I did not purchase it myself. It was a gift from an elderly auntie who is a little more formal than your average bear.

I only use this tool if we have company and I have plattered the food it is designed to serve. For everyday occasions, when it is just me, Ol' Pookers and our spoiled cats (some of whom, over the years, have surprisingly been quite fond of the food in question), I just use a simple set of kitchen tongs to plop the intended food onto all of our plates.

I know, I know... I'm such a barbarian!!!
