I was curious on the power that is consumed from a computer that is left idle, not on standby or suspended, but not running anything. I know all computers are different but is there a ballpark range? Now if you run seti on just the cpu is there a max wattage that it can draw, (limited by the type of the cpu I am assuming?) Running the GPU, that can draw a lot more power from what I know. On avg does anyone know what a ATI GPU card draws while crunching? Thanks! |

My HD 5850 drwas 158 Watts for example under full load. With each crime and every kindness we birth our future. |

Not as much as I would have guessed. I know the GPU's always say they require a high PSU (500w+ on a lot) so I figured that is close to what they would be pulling. I am at a point were I should be trimming a little off my expenses, and with the local cost of electricity through the roof, sadly, seti is going to take a hit. I have a feeling I might have to get one of though wattage meters to see if it would make that big of a difference vs just using a few cores. |

I know the GPU's always say they require a high PSU (500w+ on a lot) so I figured that is close to what they would be pulling. That is the needed PSU for the whole system (they estimate the consumption for CPU+MB+HDD+DVD+fans+... for 'a typical' system and add their GPU wattage to end with recommendation for 'you need at least 500 W PSU') You may find some reviews/tests which measured the difference idle/load for your GPU http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Islands_(GPU_family)#Radeon_HD_6800 HD 6850 - maximum power draw of 127 W HD 6870 - maximum power draw of 151 W And I found "The Truth About Graphics Power Requirements V2, See how many watts you really need" (there are big charts): http://forums.atomicmpc.com.au/index.php?showtopic=264 Under the 4 charts there is "List of URLs used for each card" (to reviews/tests on many sites) Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |

My main machine is connected to a UPS that shows the watts it's outputting. My monitor, PC, router, and modem are all connected so all I can get is a baseline of the computer with S@H not running. This machine CPU = AMD FX 8150 GPU = Nvidia GTX 560 Shader clock= 1700MHz PC running with BOINC closed: 168 watts Running 8 CPU only tasks: 286 watts Running 8 CPU and 2 GPU tasks: 422 (it was jumping around a lot but this was the highest number) So roughly 118W for the CPU and 136W for the GPU. On a 750W supply. I was thinking of adding another GTX 560 but it would put me over the capacity of my UPS. </Tazz> |
