Well, it's seems to take a world war to end a depression.

That is the general opinion ..... But .....

Depression end

Will they ever know for sure for unfortunately you can't take WWII out of the
end to the depression equation.

I would have canceled the damn exercise. You dont whack a wasps nest with a stick if they are allready riled up.

Seems like a deliberate act by the US and S.Korea to stir them up and see what happens.

Talk about telegraphing your next move. I would hope its just posturing. But who knows about dealing with a madman. Knowing him he would wait until the world thinks its winding down then launch a suprise attack.

I think the UN should just flat out tell him, If you launch an attack at anyone your country will cease to exist.

The truth is, they can't, and they won't. The UN is nothing more than a talking shop, which countries sign up to because it looks good on humanitarian grounds. Think back to Bush and the Iraq war "Nobody tells America what to do". Obviously not even the UN. They have no armed troops that they could use, they are just a blue helmeted peace keeping force, that have the same standing as the International Red Cross.

Perhaps if we had a Western world International army ..... Man from Uncle anyone ?

Im sure some Eastern countries would be gald to step up to the task.

I am sure that China, or Japan for that matter, could take care of the problem in less than 24 hours. Which makes me wonder whose interest does it serve to let N. Korea continue to exist? China could just as easily as any other country end up finding out the hard way whether N. Korea has WMD. Unfortunately, even if all of N. Korea's leaders were captured or killed it will probably take a generation to repair all of the social as well as physical damage to the country.

Send through diplomatic channels that the translation of you statements is that you are abrogating the cease fire agreement. We wish to be sure that we are not dealing with a bad translation before we take action. If this is not your intent, please reply that you will continue to observe the cease fire agreement, otherwise we will take your statements as abrogation or any overt offensive act, including throwing a rock over the boarder as proof that you have abrogated and will proceed as such. You can rest assured that if hostilities begin, we will not take survivors and will not accept any terms other than complete unconditional surrender and slavery for the North Korean people.

Back him into a corner and either make him eat crow or start it now before he has a chance to have an effective delivery system for his WMD. He has tested unlike Saddam who just blustered.

Deliver it deadpan to the Chinese to pass on and get an answer, telling then it is a matter of the gravest consequences and utmost urgency. Refuse to engage with the Chinese on this until they deliver a response. If the delivery is done correctly, watch if troops mass on the Yalu river.

I think part of the problem is that nobody wants to take on the responsibility of rehabilitating N. Korea after what would be a brief but catastrophic war S. Korea would most likely be the big loser here. Come to think of it, it is a lose-lose situation for S. Korea. If everybody waits for N. Korea to make the first move S. Korea would surely be one of the first targets. On the other hand unless there is a perfectly executed preemptive strike, N. Korea would surely dump everything they have on their neighbors to the south. So in essence S. Korea is being held hostage without actually being invaded

The US is bound by treaty to help South Korea in the event of hostilities. China is also worried about the aftermath, in that a US presence would be on China's doorstep. Discussions should take place with China prior to any potential collapse of North Korea, to address the Chinese concerns. You would have humanitarian problems, and political problems. Understanding the ramifications and concerns between all parties can lead to a more successful outcome.

But of course. However the Chinese right now are in denial over the threat. Getting them to take it on as a number one problem is necessary. Then we can negotiate with them on how to prevent a refugee crises from streaming across the Yalu. Perhaps they can do a little targeted assassination to bring about regime change.

Unfortunately no one wants NK. It is far to poor to be self sufficient even if it was taken over without significant damage, which is unlikely. The South can't prop them up. The USA can't and China wouldn't stand for it. The EU obviously can't. The Chinese might be able to but refuse to, they have their own issues.

The crackpot seems to know this and is making as much noise as he can. Someone needs to swat him like the bothersome mosquito he is.

N Korea is full of zealots. Taking that County down with conventional arms would be a huge task. They love their 'Dear Leader'. Sure there are plenty of them who do not love him but it is armed to the teeth and I'm sure they will use them.

China would LOVE to see us open another theater of war. 1) they bankroll all of our wars. 2) they would love to see us take a nose dive financially 3) this would put them at the top as a world power much more ahead of their scheduled plans. 4) then they can take, without us backing, lands they have disputed with Japan, Philippine Islands and others.

Reminds me when I was a kid and we lived under the threat of nukes all the time. But this N. Korea thing has me worried a little. Its one thing when two countries know they can blow each other off the face of the planet no matter who makes the first strike. This whack job in N. Korea has absolutly nothing to lose.

many analysts see the same thing. NK does a bunch of awful things and when pressured does it more but when offered goodies like oil and food they promise to be good again. With their new leader they really seem to be ratcheting up the military posturing.

A big sign that the latest sanctions are putting the big squeeze on them?

Perhaps Pingpong is worried that he may get overthrown so is trying to curry some
support from his people. So he's puffing his chest out so there could be someone
within his ranks who may be planning to pop it....with the view of saving the
country.

What is this guy thinking? If things keep going like they seem to be, North Korea is going to be history.

But what a history. The first leader to know that he's lost so says....

"I'm gonna take a hell of a lotta you pukes with me"

Nice history!

I'm afraid this is out of the UN's remit. It has to be the US & China together to force his hand & in a way that the above does not happen!
