Chris, that is their missile capability -- but as to the payloads they can load on them today -- something else entirely. 'Conventional' ordinance -- yes, no problem. Functioning nukes, not so much -- at least yet.

Still and all, perhaps better for the world if NK does something really stupid sooner rather than later.

That, is a very good point.

+1

Better now before they can actually deliver a bunch of nukes than later.

Maybe if he saw a squadron of bombers bearing the Russian Flag, another with the Chinese Flag & a third with the US Flag training together off the NK Coast, do you think he would get the message?

Sidenote: - All those reports of politicians, anyone ever see a slim one?

Seems to me that it is only assumed that NK have nuclear capabilities as no one
has actually been able to prove it yet. They might have a couple of howitzer
shells with the tips painted in Dulux Uranium White making them think they have
nuke capabilities now?...A fantastic new paint, amazing how it manages to brighten
up the darkest of rooms???

And one might wonder why NK did not learn from that episode in history.

Indeed Mark.

Also, Beijing would have to carefully consider any option that could lead to the collapse of the North Korean state, a possibility that could lead to millions of North Korean refugees pouring into China.

Food for thought for china as well ....

If N.Korea dose finaly implode or is forcibly removed it would be extremly important to start pouring aid in immediatly. Get them stablelized and self sufficent.

Simple enough answer & one that can cure a lot of the world's ills.....

A pacific version of NATO with USA,China, Russia with subsidiaries South Korea & Japan & anyone else that may wish to join.

Increased peace & prosperity (all those jobs becoming available)

Then have the PATO & NATO join up & sail the seas & oceans on the planet, thereby stopping piracy in its tracks....

..then maybe, just maybe, with all that increased prosperity, those of us who remember the Space Race & thought that before we'd retire, we'd see landings on Mars, might just become possible.

A lot better aims than just nuking each other & maybe tinpots like those in Ping Pong town will think twice!

SEOUL — North Korea dramatically escalated its warlike rhetoric on Thursday, warning that it had authorised plans for nuclear strikes on targets in the United States.

"The moment of explosion is approaching fast," the North Korean military said, warning that war could break out "today or tomorrow".

I am afraid that if I were the leader of one of the large powerful nations I would authorize a hit on this weirdo and all his top leaders.

It's Iraq all over again isn't it? Hussein bragged he had WMD and was prepared to use them, the world wasn't prepared to take a chance on it that he had, so took him out. They never found any, but we don't know whether they were all destoyed, just never found, or there weren't any in the fist place. Jim Mahjong says he has ordered missiles to be trained on US bases in SK. Has anyone defined what "missiles" mean? Nukes, ICBM's, nuclear warheads? Even conventional weapons will kill thousands of people. The UK has a population of 65 million, with a density of 662/Sq mile. South Korea has 50 million people and a density of 1271/Sq mile in a country less than half the size. He says he is targeting US bases, but some will go astray.

Anyone want to take a chance he is just bragging?

Actually, they did find over 600 WMDs in Iraq. Just they were old and not currently made just before the war started again.

As far as NK goes, might be time to dust off the USS Missouri for a little gunboat diplomacy. Just to remind them of what happened to NK in the 50s.

Kim Jong-un isn't the first North Korean leader to use threats for political gain. But the West doesn't really know what of make of him because of his youth and the uncertainty that shrouds the country.

Well we can't say the guy hasn't warned us. If and when hostilities start no leader can claim they were surprised.

There is an old movie I keep thinking of, "The Mouse That Roared", about a tiny country that declared war on the USA expecting to immediately surrender and thereby receive post war aid to revitalize their country.

I am sure that if that were the intent here the rest of the world would gladly help to restructure N.Korea if Jong Il and his aides would quietly go into exile.

Didnt that film end with a big mushroom cloud?

in the short term. I wouldn't want to be in Obama's shoes to decide whether to wait or fire first.

Therein lies the problem in today's world!

Strike first & the rest of the world's politicians will raise an outcry, NK strikes first & those very same politicians will raise an outcry against the intelligence services for NOT providing sufficient info.

China, instead of appealing for "calm" from everyone, should be taking a more proactive stance on this alongside Russia & the US - if not, it could turn into something the world is not prepared for.

I agree, China has been aiding and abetting the clowns in N.Korea for 50 years. Well being a super power brings with it super world responsibilitys. About time they started learning that lesson.
