Message 1336241 - Posted: 9 Feb 2013, 16:42:00 UTC

Tuesday: Complain about people using the wrong form of "too."

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Allow me, if you please...

Wednesday: You realize that TWO days of the work week are done, but sadly you still have to go TO work and there are just TOO many days until the weekend...

Thursday morning you start making plans for the weekend because you realize that THERE are only two days left until Friday. You call up all of your friends and invite yourself over to all of THEIR houses. Several of your friends do not answer the phone because THEY'RE pretending that they are out for the day.

On Friday you pack YOUR one-night-stand bag because you realize that YOU'RE hot and somebody just might ask you upstairs for a drinkie-poo after the bar closes.

Any questions, class?

I should think not!!! Clearly the boy scouts issue merit badges for solid acquisition of grammar and syntax skills. I'm pretty sure that I see one sewn onto your sash.

Whoa, Angela......

Seems that that young boyz might be getting merit badges for being gay now.

I have followed that story with interest. I find discrimination in any organization to be distasteful, and I make no exception for "private clubs".

Ltt us back off a bit and read what is actually happening. Currently the Boy Scouts is like the Military was 30 years ago. No gays period. What is being decided on is whether to allow each chartering organization to decide whether gays are allowed into their units. Many chartering organizations will not allow this because of the beliefs of the chartering organization. Many will allow gays based on the beliefs of the chartering organization.

A brief description of the layout of a Scout unit: Each unit is a part of a district based on geography. Each district is a part of a council, again based on geography. Councils report to national. It also reports to the chartering organization (typically the organization that owns the building where the Scouts meet). The chartering organization is a part of the decision process affecting some aspects of the scouting experience. The decision being made is whether to turn over the decision about allowing gays into the scouting units over to the chartering organizations from national.

Substitute the word "black" for "gay" and I believe many people will realize that discrimination is discrimination. Allowing individual units to call their own shots falls short of the sweeping social change that many, myself included, would like to see happen.

There are many good things about the Boy Scouts of America. We have a couple of young Eagle Scouts in my family, and I am so very proud of the wonderful young men they are becoming. I appreciate the impressive community service projects my young cousins planned and executed in order to earn their Eagle Scout wings. I simply cannot wrap my mind around discrimination.

OH, DON't even get me started about some words I should not say in public anymore.

OR, the reasons this nation has declined because some think I should not say them anymore.

The only problem with that sweeping a change is that many Scout units would be instantly homeless as many are hosted at churches that will not admit gays.

Athiest are also not aloud in the boy scouts. I used to be a boy scout, and was forced to attend the religious ceremonies, even though I explained that I didn't believe in God. Now they won't even let you in. You can be a muslim or other religion, but not an athiest. The boy scouts is a great organization, and I learned a lot when I was there, but it does discriminate against anyone who doesn't fit with what they want.

Perhaps there will be other community organizations willing to host the Boy Scouts once their national policies are different?

When I was a Girl Scout (...back when dinosaurs roamed the earth...) our full troop meetings were held in a local public school. On weeks when we were working on badges, we met as small groups in private homes. I have fond memories of my mother hosting 10 girls for several weekends in a row as we worked on our "hospitality badges". I learned useful skills such as how to properly set a table!!! (I imagine the Girl Scouts have updated their badges these days.)

Anyway, even in communities too small to have a public school in "town" (like Eric's extremely rural home town, for example), there might be a town hall where community members meet. In Eric's home town, there is also a nice couple who own a local restaurant/bar. They open space in the back of their restaurant during the day for various clubs to meet. My mother-in-law is retired and she belongs to several social and service organizations that use that restaurant as a meeting place.

I do not think that many, if any, scout troops would be "homeless" for long. My experience with small rural communities (in Wisconsin, at least) is that the folks who live there tend to be community oriented and creative in the way they accommodate the needs of various groups.

Many public schools and such will not host them because they are a "religious organization" even though they are multi religious. This is an effect of court rulings against public funds being spent on religious organizations. The troop I grew up with was kicked out of the public schools and is now in a church because of this.

I agree that discrimination based on sexual orientation is wrong, but we have to work on the place that is promulgating this discrimination, which is many churches.

I dunno kids......
At some point, you will so dilute the Boy/Girl scouts that the moniker no longer has any more meaning or significance. 'Scout's honor'? So what, you stand for gays, and anything else that is PC these days? Big deal.
Might as well just dispense with the boy/girl thingy and just call themselves the Queer Scouts of America.
That might look good on one's resume.

I think I'll stick with my old ideals and know that at least at one time, they had some true meaning.

Perhaps the Boy Scouts will ultimately decide to change their religious orientation requirement as well? Has that organization always been multi-religious? Was there a time during which youngsters of other faiths were excluded?

I did not grow up an atheist, but I am one now. I remember regularly pledging to "serve God" as part of my Girl Scout Pledge. I got curious and googled the updated Girl Scout pledge. Sure enough, serving God is still a part of it.

I have absolutely wonderful memories of being a Girl Scout, but I think that if Eric and I had been "blessed" with children, we would have gone the Campfire Girl route for our girls. I do not know if there is an equivalent organization for boys.

Most churches officially welcome "everyone". Of course they have their own views on what is or is not okay, but welcome the chance to "save" people.
Most scouts are not of an age they have given their preferences much thought before joining. As they discover the truth about themselves, I doubt most churches would expel them for not expelling such members.

And yes scouts of old required belief in god, but had no requirement of what that view of god was. Most athiests were tolerated grudgingly.

Scouting is already suffering because of their antiquated policy, donations are down, PR is down and welcome mats removed. It is their decision. But it would make sense from all perspectives to update their policies.

You and I seldom stand on opposite sides. But I somehow deep inside, feel that God, his teachings, and faith in him to guide our lives is a big part of what has been lost in this country, and said loss of those values contributes greatly to our current woes.
