Message 1335456 - Posted: 7 Feb 2013, 15:13:27 UTC

Im installing my EVGA 550 Ti GPU. It has a 6pin PCI Express power connector that is slpit off to two Molex power connectors.
Do I connect both molex power connectors or just One?

Ive tried searching for a video on installing a 550 Ti but no luck.

I know this is most likely a stupid question. But I dont know.

Both would be best...it distributes the current between the two connectors.

read your install infor from the GPU manufacturer. Some send the molex adapter but insist in their literature to only use the 6 pin plug. Your best bet is to upgrade your PSU to one that has at least 1 6 pin gpu plug

/edit after rereading the original post it sounds like the 6 pin you have should work

If you can, try to put the Molex connectors on different 12 volt outputs - see the side of your power supply to see if it has > 1 (12V1, 12V2, etc.) - so as to distribute the power drain more evenly. Your PSU may have > 1 but (even if you have the manual) may not tell you which outputs go with which string of connectors. So don't sweat it if you can't find the answer...

I would also plug both in, and I would try to make sure that you are using the same power cord from the power supply. I have seen funny things happen if you have both 12v rails joined externally with an adapter like this. Best if you have an unused power cord from the power supply and use that.

To add to above. One recommendation I found is to use two separate power cables for the adapter. Some power cables have two 4 pin molex connectors, you could connect your adapter to this one cable. I found that to be not recommended.

Use two separate power cables, attach one 4 pin molex from the adapater to each power cable.

To OP. (Also. 550ti has hefty power requirements. Nvidia specification says to use 550 watt power supply. That might be a little overblown, but still, do you have a power supply that is even close to 550 watt?)

Edit. NVidia website says that system would need 400 Watt power supply. Bottom, Thermal and Power Specs:

Yes, it is more than enough. I am surprised you got 550ti. With such nice power supply you could have run two GTX 460. Also, you should have two 6 pin connectors for the graphics cards, so you should not need an adapter at all.

I edited my earlier post. Nvidia says the whole system with 550ti should need 400 Watt power supply, so you are ready to roll.

My 550 Ti just has one 6 pin connector on the card. But the power cors they sent with the card is a 6 pin slit into two molex connectors.

true but your PSU should have a 6 pin connector already to go. No need for the adaptor

Yes, by all means...
IF the PSU has 6 pin PCIE connectors available, use them and dispense with the 6 pin to Molex Y adapter altogether.

They included an adapter with your card, you don't need it. The adapter is for people like me who have older power supplies. My power supply does not have any PCI-e power cables, not the 6 pin, not the 8 pin. All I have are the 4 pin molex and SATA power connectors. So people like me need the adapter.

You have a modern power supply. I checked the newegg page for it, it has two 6 pin PCI-e power connectors, they are there specifically to power video cards. Just hook one of them to the video card, that is all you need, ignore the adapter.

Update. The card is in and running Milkyway. I havent been able to connect to Seti since yesterday. Just get the normal cant connect blurb. So I know the card is working. Now I hope it dosent start throwing errors at milkyway. I know I need to update the drivers (260.something) But Im to tired to do that now.
thanks to all who answered my questions.

it looks like you have a few validation inconclusives at MW

I noticed that. The good thing is that the others errored out. I also have two that errored out.

I did update the drivers this morning to 310.## the temps are right around 63 C. But I realize Seti is not running on that card either. I will run milkyway out then see if I can connect to get Seti work in the morning.
