Message 1333325 - Posted: 31 Jan 2013, 22:50:20 UTC - in response to Message 1333321.

And thank you all for mentioning I was just suppose to just add the aistub to the existing app_info instead of swapping out the existing GPU section. Surprise! Dumped all of my previously fetched GPU units. Sorry wingmen.

Very much not happy now.

See, never would have looked in the .aistub (ah, as in app_info stub, I get it now) and I just thought we copied the files in question to the projects directory and since I don't understand how BOINC supervises the execution of the various apps, I wouldn't understand about how the slots directory factors in.

If you have used the Installer in the past, you'll have a number of .aistub's there, if you copy the new .aistub's and all the other files, while deleting the old APATI.aistub, MBATI.aistub and MBATI_HD5.aistub's,
(just leave the .aistub's that you want in your app_info) then run the aimerge.cmd, it'll merge all your .aistub's into one app_info.xml

Claggy

Well better late than never... oops.

aimerge is part of the installer.
It should be in the project dir if you used the installer once.

Which will be resent as lost tasks (once you're merged your aistub's), 20 at a time, so in just 5 scheduler contacts you can have all your GPU work resent (but you're still got to download them)

Yes, but I wouldn't have known to use it. See "common" knowledge not dripping down to the masses.

Are there still standard vs HD5+ versions? I only see one executable for the new r1761 MB.

Though r1761 HD5 completes V6 and V7 tasks w/o problems there is some inaccuracy on forthcoming large V7 tasks. So I decided to debug this more before release.

Make sure you reserve a core to feed the GPU, I do it by setting both <avg_ncpus> and <max_ncpus> to 1.0

Changing all entries in the app_info to this?

Is it very important to? Aren't you sacrificing a core that could be processing? Just curious!

What's the lowest generation ATI card that can use MB7_win_x86_SSE_OpenCL_ATi_r1761.exe? Can my HD 4670 r430 use it, or is it still restricted to APs only? I'm using the AMD 13.1 Legacy driver containing AMD-APP 937.2, is that a 'bad' number for any of these Apps?

Thanks for all your work.

Check to what Catalyst it corresponds. You need Catalyst 11.7 or better but not higher than 12.8.

If you saw incompatibility with ATi MB before than this build probably will not work too, but worth to try.

Not complete reverting. it's not so easy, look Claggy's post and readme for this. Special tool or manual treatment of leftovers is required, thanks to AMD.
EDIT: another possibility - need to increase iterations number. New app can load GPU harder.

I take the C-50 with me to work, so once the existing MB WU finished, I did a complete uninstall, ran AMD's uninstall utility, and did a complete driver sweep (by which time there was only a couple of DLLs left over to clean up).

Rebooted, installed Catalyst 12.8 yet again, and retried MB r1761. I remained hopeful as the progress went to about 0.8% in 5 minutes (takes 2 minutes to do the compilation, initialisation, etc), but then it crashed again. Rebooted, tried one more time with period_iteration_num bumped up to 32, but crashed yet again. I've reverted to MB7 r426 again.

Just wondering: did you ever get r1761 working with your C-60? I don't see any results in your task list for that host.

Lowest generation is HD 5xxx.
Only card that is proved to work from HD 4 is HD 4850.

HD47xx worked w/o problems before too, but was not tested in this round.

Depends on how many instances you are running.
I dont like this way of reserving cores.
I set 2 cores free via boinc manager thats enough to run 3 instances on GPU.

GPU is more efficiently so i dont feel sorry to do it.

We have had a AMD/ATI Low GPU usage problem with both the MB and AP apps in the past, the cure is to leave a CPU core free,

There are also a highest generation driver for this.
From the Readme:
- Catalyst 12.10,12.11 beta and 13.1 have broken OpenCL compiler that will result in driver restarts or invalid results.

Same driver limitation for prev released ATi MB builds too AFAIK.
If someone can find old/different enough build that will work OK with these drivers please let me know.

I have tested a few HD 4780 which didn`t work properly.

What might you recommend to set on a Core 2 Duo E6600? Two cores

On most configs GPU much faster than CPU core. And with modern GPU drivers GPU load drops significally if all cores are busy with another work. So yes, sacrify core to feed GPU better. It gives better overall performance even on AMD APU devices. It's not true only for Intel Ivy Bridge where CPU core so fast and accompanied GPU so weak that reserving core degrades performance.

C-60 (netbook) has problems with fan now and experiences power shutdowns too often. So was excluded from testing for now. Will try to check MB7 t1761 on it soon.

Just try crunching on both CPU cores, i never saw the problem when i had both my GTX460 and HD5770 in my E8500 host, when i swapped the GPUs to my i7-2600K (over a year ago), then i saw intermittent low GPU usage and extended run times (with the same driver combination)

One core should be enough.
We need to check variation of runtimes after running a few tasks on it.

I'm currently using this with Catalyst 13.1:
MB6_win_x86_SSE3_OpenCL_ATi_HD5_r390.exe

I don't get any errors and they get validated so far.
That goes for every Catalyst version before that as well.

I have been running r390 under all recent ATI drivers up to and including 13.1 but today I went back to 12.8 so I could install r1761.

AP r555 and r1363 also worked up to and including 13.1.
