[quote]Wind and solar have their uses but with an average output of only 30 to 40 percent of their rated capacity are very inefficient and hardly cost effective

Average output of wind turbines runs at about 28% - UK, solar - well, It just doesn't
work after "dark". Plus with solar you have to regularly clean the panels to
maintain even a lowish level of efficiency. My neighbour has some up on the roof
of his house. They've been up their for 4 years and I've never seen anyone attempt
to clean them yet.

if Russia gets stroppy and turns off the pipelines, erope has a problem.

Oy - Chris, I thought us Brits knew how to spell, there's a 'u' in Europe?

No, but he does on "MINE".....so a taste of his own medicine, here.
English language is quite archaic in some respects when you look at the way we
have to spell some of our words....a bit of modernisation wouldn't go amiss here.

Oy - Chris, I thought us Brits knew how to spell, there's a 'u' in Europe?

First point - Oy is spelt Oi.

Second point - I thought "u" didn't want to be in Europe?

Nickywicky is being very pickywicky ;-)

Oy or OY may refer to: Oy vey Oy, a Yiddish exclamation of chagrin, dismay.

See, I was right for for I was dismayed by your laps in spelling, my-boy...my-boy.

Since there's no real "ope" in Europe any more it just leaves us with, "Er" yes,
er...what's it all about, any one know???

Oy or OY may refer to: Oy vey Oy, a Yiddish exclamation of chagrin, dismay.

I thought "Oi" was a call for attention as in " Oi, you, get away from that"

See, I was right for for I was dismayed by your laps in spelling, my-boy...my-boy.

I was taught in school that in that context, the word was spelled lapse !!! (unless you are referring to a plural of "lap". i.e. Where the cat sits.)

Well exactly .... Europe minus ope leaves Eur.

"Eur" yes. Hmm, doesn't have quite the same ring to it ....

Ah but Chris you have forgotten about the 'u' that you initially left out
of Europe i.e. erope....no 'ope' leaves....er'...got it!!

You can start filling in your hole now, good job you didn't dig down too far

In spite of the negative publicity from various parts of the trash media spewing cheap stories:

Tesla earns first profit, Model S wins '99% perfect' rating

... down-to-earth business of selling Tesla electric cars is heading skywards after the company reported its first-ever profit and saw its Model S sedan get a stonking 99 per cent approval rating from the testers at Consumer Reports. ...

... Tesla's Model S is now the top selling US electric car, ahead of GM's Chevy Volt and Nissan's Leaf. Cars are also being shipped to customers in Europe. ...

... Profits might possibly have been higher had The New York Times not published an error-strewn review of the Model S, provoking an angry war of words with Musk. At the time, Musk claimed the review cost the company $100m in lost revenue, so the news on Thursday that Consumer Reports testers had awarded Tesla's Model S a score of 99 out of 100 points, outscoring any other car in its rankings, should be worth a buck or two. ...

... 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds. The low center of gravity that comes from having 85Kwh-worth of batteries on the bottom of the vehicle also means it handles well while cornering at speed...

The NYT's low opinion aside, the response of the the rest of the motoring cognoscenti has been very positive. ...

Now we 'just' need to clean up the rest of our act...

All on our only one planet,
Martin

Tesla s looks ok seems to have performance but .....

the batteries not liking lithium ion if like other lithium iron batteries the 4 year warranty is probably all you get out of them , makes it very expensive for the price .

But we have to start somewhere I spose .

If GMH volt is what they have advertised out here in oz prob better to go with that till capacitor batteries have been developed and are being manufactured at least you can prob use other fuels than petrol to run it when the batteries have no power

A real bargain . When are you ordering yours ??

A while ago I postulated what a successful electric would look like--I seem to remember remarking that maybe Tatra Motors or the Chinese could pull it off.

Capacity - 4 to 5 people
Warranty on Batteries -200 thousand miles
Electric range -100 miles
Storage -30 KWH or so
Recharge time at 240 volts--4-6 hours
Aux power 1000-1300 cc turbo Diesel of perhaps 140 horsepower (around 100 Kilowatts for youse commies)
Curb weight 2500 -2700lbs max
Cost bogey $2300 -$2500 US
performance--0-100Kph 8.5 sec or less
Top Speed 120 Miles per hour

This is a very tall order that may require significant breakthroughs and cheap but exotic materials. I still think it could be done within a decade.

A few offerings cover pieces of this. The Chevy volt meets some specs but is too heavy and way too expensive.

The smaller Prius meets the cost, performance and weight bogies but has no real electric range

I don't think a $60,000 to $120,000 car will gain wide acceptance and make a dent on oil consumption.

I don't really think that this will reduce CO-2 production unless we can get on with Nuclear Power production; but it is vital that we reduce drastically the use of foreign oil for transportation.

What do you all think ??

Electricity is not cheap anymore. I cant see paying big bucks for a car then having to plug the damn thing in every night and see my meter spinning like a whirling dervish. Id say get a a 200 mile range before a pick pocket rechargeing. The idea of the electric car is nice but not practicle for the common man. And lets face it you have to win over the avergage joe before any change can gtake place.

Could the American electricity grids deal with 254 million vehicles being charged
daily if every car owner in the USA drove one?...that's without taking into
consideration all the other electrical appliance that the car owner may be
running in their homes at the same time along with their vehicle charger.

considering that we would have 254 million less cars lined up at the gas pumps I'd say yes. It would mean the burden would be shifted from the Oil Companies to the Electric generation folks.

Once again this is a boon for Alternative fuels because wind solar and geothermal can make up for almost any deficit in electricity production.

Lets also not forget that we'd be dumping most of our need for oil being turned into gasoline. This would lower demand and increase self sufficiency in energy. Its a win win win.
