Interesting
Peak wind Is coming
So wind farms may not be the magic silver bullet that some think (as some on this thread have already pointed out).

And. The authors of this paper is are "true believers".

Lewis Page seems well threaded among denialists. If you consider him a "true believer" please provide source. Otherwise I consider this incorrect at best, or intentionally misleading more likely. A third stronger term I will withold in the interest of civility.

wind mills are by their vary nature poorly designed to directly produce electricity.

wind mills are best suited to high Torque low rpm variable applications.

(peak wind is coming) assumes the worst possible outcome of badly designed wind

mills and while making some valid points grossly over estimates the difficulty

of generating large amounts of wind power.

I have long promoted the idea of using wind mills to pump water back up behind

hydro dams for a second or third pass through the water turbines.

Maybe this belongs in the "Beer Drinkers" thread over in the Cafe :)

Panasonic: We'll save Earth by turning CO2 INTO BOOZE
The heading is a bit of a joke but the idea of turning CO2 directly into ethanol has its merits.

I was referring to Prof David Keith who is a co-author of the paper the article is about.

From the article
It should be made clear that Professor Keith is starting from the position that global warming is still definitely on ..... and that humanity must go carbon-free or anyway carbon-very-low within a lifetime,

BTW. did you bother to read the actual paper (the link is in the article), or are you just shooting from the hip ?

T.A.

Edited for clarity, as some seem to have difficulty with the difference between an "article" and a "paper".

So I'm not the only one wondering if some deny the true seriousness of the problem faced by the human race.

I'm not sure if they deny the seriousness of the problem or if they have been hoodwinked by the simplistic propaganda that all can be fixed with a single wave of a wind powered/solar powered magic wand.

Yes, it could be a simple failure to understand the required engineering and sociopolitical changes of a solution to meet the targets of the models of warming.

=============================================================================

the first thing needed are good models for weather prediction, the current

estimate is 1200 peteflops to produce a weather map for the world 1 week out.

at this time no one has that kind of computer power with the possible exception

of the nsa.

one week out is not nearly good enough to start monkeying with the weather to

promote global cooling.

thankfully the world will not end tomorrow if we don't do something

imeaditately, though soon is good.

wind, tidal, solar, and nuclear are just part of a solution, the vary nature of

the infrastructure that allows us to live as we do will need to be re examined

and made more efficient so that everyone can live at a similar level without

destroying the planet.

so nobody is denying that there is a problem but it did not get broken over

night nor will it be fixed over night.

that being said what can you do?

build a monster gaming machine with grate gpu's so when the realy large weather

models are written you can help run them.

Just a reminder of why we should care for our only planet, and of a pretty nice way of how for just one example:

In pictures: Landmark: The Fields of Photography

... the perception of our changing planet...

The technology that could 'revolutionise' how we light the world

Kick-started by the invention of the light bulb, the way we illuminate our homes and our lives is ever-changing - particularly in a world where the challenge is to light more, but to consume less energy. ...

... But what is it that makes something beautifully lit, and what role does technological innovation play in illuminating both our buildings and our state of well-being?...

Living here shouldn't cost the earth for everything else.

All on our only one planet,
Martin

I propose we make any kind of lighting illegal. That includes candles, whale oillamps and any kind of fossil fuel lighting, Including wood fires untill wind, solar, hydro and nuke power can totally take 100% of the power needs.

That would reduce C02 emissions. It would be the end of humans but so what the Earth would be better off in the long run. Untill the sun expands and vaporises the earth any way.

Look LEDs are fine I have a few of them my self. They cost more and most offer the same lumens for the watts as CFLs so I havent made the switch to them for that very reason. I do have 99% of my home converted to CFls.

We can work towards that. No 'sudden big bang' change needed provided we do make the change soon enough.

Such is the impermanence of our existence. That's still no reason or excuse to trash the existence we do have for everyone.

Good stuff. And hopefully, something yet better will become available. Meanwhile, if what you have is working well, no need to change until there is good reason to for efficiency/effect.

Better yet would be to make frivolous Marketing driven 'consumerism' 'illegal'... That would save the world enough to buy us more than enough years to turn around the unfavorable Human forced climate change...

There has to be a better way than this:

BP appeal over 'absurd' Gulf oil spill payouts

The compensation settlement - like the disaster - is one of the biggest in US history

Shame the CO2 pollution cannot also be so directly seen...

And we are risking the same sort of disaster again in the so far pristine Arctic?!

Meanwhile, I wonder if the present crazy jet stream meander and resultant extreme weather across Europe, Russia, and parts of the USA are a consequence of the reduced ice in the Arctic...

It would help if all parties agree to agree/disagree with scientific findings.....

..& it would help if the scientists got their facts right before commencing a world wide scare allowing politicians to jump on the bandwagon to rip us all off!

The Great Green Con No 1

The chickens are finally coming home to roost, and why? because it's starting to
get cold out there. But of course, this will all be down to man-made global
cooling now...CO2 blamed for causing the earth to cool down. If the planet is
starting to cool down then it will have started a little sooner than I had
expected it to. I gave global warming at least another 25 years to go before
this warming cycle came to an end but may be I calculated the start date
incorrectly in the first instance.

Be careful in your statistical understanding. For instance. If the statement were that they are 99% sure that the temperature would be within a given range then the range would be much wider and the the black line of actual temperature would be within the 99% prediction interval.

Kind of confusing isn't it--but think about it.

Cold, not global warming is the threat

"No Minister. For starters, we can introduce "Green Taxes" & the more that die off early, the less the Treasury will have to pay for pensions, so it's a win win situation for us"

Strange scenario, Government and gas supplier driven euthanasia for the old aged.
They don't actually mean to do this, the Government nor the gas suppliers, but
they don't always think of the results their actions may lead to. By the way,
if anyone in the UK thinks that supplies of oil and gas via the process of UK
fracking will give us automatically cheaper energy will be wrong. Prices will
still be fixed via world demand and unless demand drops off then prices will
still stay high and possibly go even higher in the UK. Once energy via fracking
satisfies home demand then the excess will be exported to earn the UK valuable
foreign currency. The energy companies involved in Fracking supplies will be
pushed into producing as much as they can to feed this need to export. One
method adopted by our Governments will be to keep home demand down to as
minimum as possible, done so via price control, i.e. making certain that we
the UK public can not buy it any cheaper than those of anyone else abroad.
Anyone here in the UK come across this scenario before? Yup, North Sea oil and
gas circa 1960's and onwards.

Funny how that is ...

Seems like the only solution to CO2 is depopulation.
