One of my crunchers, the slowest one, has gone bluescreen gaga on me. I haven't yet made a serious attempt to fix it and probably won't until at least Saturday. The last contact it made with the project was at 22:00 UTC yesterday, when it reported the AP it had been working on for a few days. It shows as having 33 tasks in progress and if I can't get it going again, I apologize to my wingmates on those.

(One option I see, if I can't get Windoze to work again, is to convert it to some flavor of linux. The only other thing I run on it is Quicken; does anybody know if that will run on linux?)

No native version, not sure if it will run under wine.

Per the WINE HQ, it seems most versions run well except "Quicken 2012 Premiere"

See the link.

Thanks for the info. I'll check into that if I can't get Windows working again.

BTW, guys, if I do have to go Linux, what would you recommend for someone who:
has never even seen it before
thinks that of all the Windows versions, XP is still the best user experience
has used Mac and hates it
    is a cheapskate

?

Why don't you simply install Windows again if the current installation won't work? I mean, if the hardware is broken, Linux won't run on it properly either, if the hardware is OK and only the operating system is FUBAR, than make a clean installation.

Because I don't have the install disc. I bought the computer used with a clean install of XP Pro, but no CD.

If you got the valid serial number you can download the disc somewhere using the original serial number.

I do that on customer PCs quite often.

BOINC clients are compiled on Ubuntu, so if you need the latest clients, go there. I am running Open SuSE and am still using 6.10.58.

If you go to Linux choose Ubuntu Or Mint (built from Ubuntu). Basically that choice comes down to your preference of desktop, which as a windows user you will probably prefer Mint.

But....
If you don't want the headaches of learning Linux you may very well be better off trying to reinstall Windows.

As was mentioned, you can acquire a disk anywhere and use your valid license key during the install and you will be golden, perhaps may need to phone MS' automated system, but that's it.

(And if you do go to linux and want to easily change your Boinc to a more appropriate version than what is offered as standard, PM me as there are options handled by a member of Debian Boinc Maintainers team that I could point you to.)

Or copy it from someone you know. And no, it's not illegal as long as you have a valid serial number. There's no copy protection on that discs and with the possibility to integrate service packs and updates Microsoft even more or less tells you do make your own disc if you need it.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I hope I can make use of some of it.

Unfortunately, a plumbing issue has arisen and fixing that will necessarily take priority over fixing the computer. :(

(This has been a pretty crappy week overall.)

Aaarrgghhh!!! I spent several hours yesterday trying to get the Quicken data file off this machine's hard drive, but the other computers I connected it to kept telling me I didn't have permission to copy it.

Then I tried to repair or reinstall Windows, but it stalls while loading off the CD and after the second time it did that, it gave me another blue screen!

Try getting the Quicken files with a USB stick or other removable media?

For the windows boot issues, as someone who has seen many strange install issues due to old CD/DVD ROM drives I recommend trying a different CD drive.

Curious if you would get the same error while trying to do a full fresh install instead of "repair/reinstall".

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, good luck sir!
