You could try phoning your ISP. Sometimes a DSL connection goes down on the server side. Regards Hans |

> You could try phoning your ISP. Sometimes a DSL connection goes down on the > server side. I second this. I have a similar setup (FC2, pppoe connection through adsl). It happened a few times that ifup'ing ppp0 failed, and in all of these instances there was nothing wrong with my setup, just the server was down. Since you say you dual-boot with XP, try connecting using that. My bet is it will fail too. - Roberto |

I thought I would get more response from the community on this one, as hhmmmmm....Rach...is getting with her broadband issue... There has to be some linux gurus out there who know about the ppp0 and pppoe connect with FC2. It is not the server side as windoz XP connects fine....I have exhausted myself trying to get FC2 to work, I keep getting can not activate network interface ppp0...... would do no good to call the ISP as I am an American living and working in Chongqing China.....this far inland English is not as widely spoken as in the coastal cities... And as everyone back in the States knows, if you call your ISP....ex.Comcast...as soon as you say Linux....you get "sorry we don't support Linux..." 'nough said. Bummed in China..... No malice intended.....was just trying to get a fix for FC2 Peace, Joe |

You're looking in the wrong place. I could probably figure it out if I took the time... but I'm not ina linux fixing mood when I read these forums, I'm in a boinc mood. :-) Find your local LUG. Subscribe to their mailing list. Introduce yourself. Explain your problem and ask for help. Or ask on a FC newsgroup. Or ask in a Fedora IRC channel. It's all about hitting the right audience... unfortunately, there aren't a ton of linux power users here, and those that are here aren't here to think about linux issues. :-) Rob |

As root, run: # export DEBUG="/root/debug.out" and then: # adsl-start This won't fix the problem, but at least you'll have a detailed trace of everything pppoe does and where it fails. My bet is authentication. Are you sure you provided the right username/password when you ran adsl-setup (you ran adsl-setup, didn't you?)? - Roberto |

I've been wanting to try Fedora and I'm DLing it now. I'll give it a spin as soon as i get all 4 disks. Since it works in windows still, I think we can rule out the card and the connection. Are there other PCs on your network or just the one PC. If there are other PCs then U could try Pinging them to see if the ethercard it has the right drivers installed. If that fails then FC may have not detected the card, installed the wrong driver or no driver at all. If pinging another PC is successfull but no internet then some tweaking of the configuration may be in order.(username/pasword sort of stuff). I m running Mandrake at the moment(I change around a bit). Dureing the install process It detects my ethercard then allows me to select connection type. Instead of ADSL ( Which is what i have) I choose LAN connection instead. Then it allows me to choose the network card from a list. The list is always set by default to PPP. instead of PPP I select my Ethercard from that list. Next it asks to set up DNS IPs, Gateway IP. etc... U can get these #'s from your setting in Windows to make sure Since your Windows connection works, You'll know u have the right #s that way. If U need help getting those #s with windows then Let me know Which version U running and I'll talk u through it. Once I get FC3 ( looks like it may be about 2 days) I'll install it and see how it is different from Mandrake and be of more help. I have also seen Cable/DSL modems that require U have DHCP( Your IP will be set by the Modem) configure on your box instaed of a Static( IP is set by you) IP. This was only when the PC was directly connected to the modem box. Not when there was a Router between the Modem and the PC. Let me know if U have a router/switch connected or any other PCs on the same DSL modem box. From Windows write down on paper the DNS IP #s , Gateway IP # (If it has one set) and whether it is useing DHCP or not. Do not publish these or any other IP addresses in this or any other forum.( for your own safety) and I'll get back to you. Feel free to try the DNS and gateway setting from Windows in Linux till then and let me know what happened. I have about an hour left till bedtime. Till then I think I 'll check out the FAQ/Forums over at Fedora. Good luck. Don't give up yet.:-) |

I found this in Redhat Knowledge base. To create an account(free) click the link below then click on Knowledgebase. https://www.redhat.com/support/service/guide/ PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) is often used by ADSL providers. If your provider uses PPPoE, you will likely need the PPPoE client to connect. Recent versions of Red Hat ship with the Roaring Penguin PPPoE client on the installation CD-ROM. The package name is rp-pppoe. At this time, Red Hat technical installation support does not provide assistance with PPPoE configurations. This document will briefly explain how to install and use the PPPoE client. First, make sure you have properly configured your network card. Next, download and install the rp-pppoe-.i386.rpm client. Login as root, change to the directory where you have downloaded the file and type: rpm -ivh rp-pppoe-.i386.rpm (where is the version number) After the package is installed, type: adsl-setup . If you have machines on a local network behind a firewall, add the following line to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local script ifconfig eth0 mtu 1452 From here, you will be asked to answer several questions. Enter the appropriate responses to configure the client. After you have finished answering these questions, as root, type: chkconfig pppoe on /etc/rc.d/rc.local/pppoe start You can bring the link up or down by typing adsl-start or adsl-stop. |

When I installed FC1, the installation program incorrectly identified my NIC. I had to go to the manufacturer's website and get the correct drivers. After installing the drivers, I had to use a static IP. I couldn't get it to work with DHCP. Hope this helps. |

Actually I am overwhelmed by all the responses to this off topic thread. Thank you to everyone who viewed, and to those who replied. @ all thank you so much for the comments and suggests. @athlonrob...thank you for your honesty...I completely understand... :) @roberto....you were absolutely right....authentication was the prob. Here in China the ISP in my case ChinaMobile, will set your user ID to that of your cellphone number, I know it sounds strange, anyway it was a simple and very stupid oversight on my part. I left off the (e) for my user ID, ex. e137-0657-XXXX, I was setting 137-0657-XXXX. I don't know why...after trying everything, all the suggests. from yourself Roberto(thanks), Terror(thanks), Dust(thanks),Hans (thanks)it just suddenly dawned on me as I'm walking around the house, "hey stupid(that's me) you left of the "e" for the user ID..." and that did it, went back edited ppp0 added the "e" and voila!!!! connected..... So xie xie ni (sounds like she she knee) means "thank you" in Chinese. Sincerely, Joe As always no malice intended..... @Rachel....I feel I owe you an apology....I know you ask for a lot of help, and many people hold your hand to help, I guess I should hold your hand too.....that's what we're all here for to help and support everyone in the community. So Rach...just put your hand out and I'll be glad to hold it. Jusy hope my wife is not watching ;) @Roberto(again) I reinstalled kboincspy...the rpm for FC3 works like a charm, but I don't understand...I think I am still running kde 3.2....I did a yum to update and install kde 3.3.... had some dependency issues, but after DL'ing your rpm for FC3... KBS...installed smoothly...and under settings have the ability to attach to other projects, the only glitch for me is when I try the configure option, she crashes, but no problem, still running FC2, am waiting for FC3 to show up on the market here in Chongqing. My apologizes to all for the long post..... |

Even if you don't have a CD-burner, you know you can download the FC3 isos and do an hard disk install, don't you? All you need is a FAT32 partition big enough to hold the 4 iso images (and if you double-boot with WinXP, chances are you already have one), and a DOS (I believe FreeDOS will do) floppy. Details at: http://linux_fan.spymac.net/en/linux/Install_Fedora_Core_2_from_Hard_Disk.html (the instructions are for FC2, but they should work for FC3 as well). - Roberto |
