I can't really think of any cons. Your personal stats are still yours, even if you wind up leaving the team. On the other hand, I can think of several pros. Building friendships, sense of community, camaraderie, support, etc... Take a look at the forum of the team that I belong to, "broadbandreports.com Team Starfire". You will see people that have come to care about one another, help one another, discussing Seti, as well as any other topic under the sun, even consoling each other on their losses, and a whole lot more. http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/seti |

I agree with Heaphus. The team I am on also has forums, websites (including my stats site of course :) and an IRC channel, all of which help build a community. And of course there are more bragging rights - "I'm on a top ten team!" - and friendly competition. Granted, you can participate in the forums and IRC channel without being a member but then you won't get your complimentary alpaca mailed to you. Although I'm still waiting on mine... must have gotten hung up in the mail. :) A member of The Knights Who Say NI! For rankings, history graphs and more, check out: My BOINC stats site |

> I just started a week ago > Cons: your email addy is viewable to the team founder. So don't join a spammer team. |

Since you seem to be an AMD user, check out our team @ http://amdusers.com we have teams for every boinc project and many that still do distributed computing without the boinc client. Here is our seti@home join page <a>http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/team_display.php?teamid=31777[/url] |

I joined Team Picard and have only found one con.I play online games on there instead of doing my housework or getting an early night. There are so many +'s.Great forums and useful information and news updates about Boinc projects and general pc stuff and science and space. The forums are friendly and you get to meet a range of people from all around the globe.Free online games are good and fun and we also have friendly competitions with our stats on Boinc projects to who can do the most work.Team Picard is like a community of friendly people who chat about food and Xmas and tell jokes as well as talk about Boinc and seti and computers. It is one of the best websites I know of.I can talk on there(chat-room) and I can look up advice and tips and ask questions and play games and have friendly competitions with people and just basically have a great time.Pick a good Team and you will be laughing. The only sense of joining a team is the community (from my point of view). WARR - Wissenschaftliche Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Raketentechnik und Raumfahrt (WARR - scientific working group for rocket technology and space travel) |

I believe that recent upgrades have made it such that the team founder sets up the default preferences for all members (please correct me if I am wrong about this). Depending on your taste and the defaults of the team founder, this could be a pro or a con. |

It's only the case if you join about a special link, f.e. http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/create_account_form.php?teamid=30336, but this preference could be changed later. So I see no probs here :). Depending on your taste and the defaults of the team founder, this > could be a pro or a con. > Founder can setup a link which new members can choose to use to join project more easily. Mostly intended if you wanted your ...grandfather to join a team, for example. (Please don't tell me your grandfather invented the Eniac ;) |

while the first sense of joining a team is the community, the 2nd is to get higher score in a shorter time. compare to thousands is alot more satisfactory than compare to a million. Not to mention starting a flame war nor to bother anybody. But for me personally, i'll never expect to discover anything. the scientific aspect of seti is very low compared to other dc-projects which involves a more practical use. So the most members even the long-time members are here because of stats, imho The higher ranking members running a bunch of quad opterons and dozens of custom pcs, well, if these guys wanted to participate in a scientific project, they would not have join a financial orientated it-company and using their servers and workstations to crunch for seti in idletime. Well, may be not. So the real questions is: I'm looking for stats, what to do? I you are a home user: join a team! You don't have any chance to get up into the first thousands by your own home pcs. In a team you have still the chance to ramp up yourself into a "i was init" -- keep it real. spectral |

Thanks for all the info. Time to start looking for a team to join. Besides, the Seti screen saver makes for a great nite-lite. If you remain calm, you don't have all the facts. |

Question: Are all the teams, besides the one I belong to, small? The team I am on has so many members that they could create their own small city. There cannot be any kind of "real" camaraderie with such a large population of people. I've been thinking about dropping them and joining a smaller team. A much cozier, more personable team. Or maybe, create a new team.... L8R.... --- CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Your welcome to join Team AlienWare Siran, we are just a small Team but do alright for the amount of members we have. We have a Team at all the Sites and don't bother each other except maby an e-mail now & then if something comes up, we just pretty much do out own thing. |
