How long before some crime syndicate gets the idea to militarize and give a little demonstration say opening the flood gates of a dam and then demands the crown jewels not to do it in thousands of systems. |

Naw, that's impossible isn't it.... ...I mean, the backbone of the Internet is Linux after all & that's unhackable. |

Naw, that's impossible isn't it.... So... The internet stays up unperturbed to keep the channels open to the vulnerable SCADA end points to be held open to ransom... The USA can have all the vague 'laws' it likes about not somehow 'hacking'/'cracking' whatever online systems. If the windows are left wide open, there's always some mischievous imp that will oblige... Abandon your cracked windows for something somewhat more reliable?... IT is what we make it... http://www.instawallet.org/ http://www.infoworld.com/t/data-security/cyber-criminals-look-cash-in-bitcoins-soaring-value-215923 Funny how that is. Isn't Bitcoin built on FLOSS? Sure don't ever remember anything like this on this proprietary system https://www.paypal.com/home Security has to be designed in by professionals in security, not your average drive by contributor to a FLOSS project. |

http://www.instawallet.org/ I guess we will see how good FLOSS is at keeping the bad guys out of what they set their sights on wont we?
Old James |

Security has to be designed in by professionals in security, not your average drive by contributor to a FLOSS project. Which is where the open peer review works so well. And for anything of interest/importance, you can bet there is lots of peer review. Meanwhile, how do you know that there isn't some "less than average capability" hidden behind whatever proprietary software? Especially so when there is that very deliberate secrecy there to hide everything and everything is run down to the cheapest costs... IT is what we make it... Just one of the latest "ouches" to watch out for: Microsoft withdraws patch after botched security update ... Windows 7 users installing the update saw error messages on rebooting, with a recommendation to run chkdsk. Others reported the infamous blue screen of death or a recommendation to boot from the system disk. ... This sort of thing has happened before... Where entire businesses lose all their desktop IT for the sake of that one unexpected 'update'... 'Automatic' updates: Damned if you do, damned if you don't... Any system that minimizes the need for any updates has got to be better than the present risk of crash and burn each month... IT is what we make it... Can you trust I.T workers in "secure" industries? German Tax Office raids "A total of five German states clubbed together to buy the CD for €4 million from an anonymous informant." Hope tax was paid on that! |

There is a rather interesting mix of people and companies 'for' and 'against' this "snoopers charter without bounds" legislation: Cispa bill on cyber security passed by the US House The US House of Representatives has passed the controversial Cyber Information Sharing and Protection Act. Cispa is designed to help combat cyberthreats by making it easier for law enforcers to get at web data. This is the second time Cispa has been passed by the House. Senators threw out the first draft, saying it did not do enough to protect privacy. Cispa could fail again in the Senate after threats from President Obama to veto it over privacy concerns. ... All for your own good? Really?! All in the land of the free? I was wondering how much longer medical records would take till they showd up in the cloud Up untill a few months ago I felt the same way. But I read an article in a science magazine about codes and cyphers. Since they have been used it was back and forth between the coders and the code breakers. But this article stated that the pendulum is swinging toward the code makers. And computers are the reason. They also tout the quantom computer as being unbreakable. Im not up quantom mechanics but it seems if you build a more powerfull one it should break a less powerful one. There was a project that sent work units of German WW2 transmissions to be decoded. I dont know if they still do though. But even with all the computers working on them some have still not been decoded.
Old James |

Can you really trust computers after this? Hacked AP tweet causes momentary losses of $136.5 billion "Only the computers react to something that serious disseminated in such a way. He also partially blames algorithmic trading programs that react to certain headlines." So wonder how much losses this headline will cause..... "Obama blown to bits & 50% of America rejoices" |

Can you really trust computers after this? Yes. They did exactly what the idiots told them to do. None of them failed to do as instructed. Why should there be any distrust of the machine if it did exactly what it was instructed to do? Programmers, the real weak link in IT. |

Can you really trust computers after this? No, the weak link is those who take the results from a computer as gospel.... ..and apply them! |
