Only women are allowed to roll their "R's" around here :-))

Why's that?

That seems to make the same point my link did.

Oh good grief. Could some kind soul take this young man to one side and explain ....

That's difficult because of the different spellings of the derrière on both sides of the pond. (TBH, I only got it when pondering the last post ;-)

*blink* thanks Gundolf. That one was clearly lost in translation.

Oh, and Chris, I'm sure the ladies around here wouldn't mind an attractive guy giving some language lessons...

I *think* I understand.

I'm not especially attractive, but I wouldn't mind getting together with a lady for some language practice.

Doubt it. Birds can twist heads half way around and when they get territorial the contests can result in some drastic flight maneuvers, especially if they lock talons. And the sun angle, shadows and highlights are consistent so if it is a photoshop job someone spent a lot of time getting it right.

Message 1347589 - Posted: 17 Mar 2013, 9:26:31 UTC

I see the count to thread has suffered from the dreaded "copyright" problem. For separate reason I recently did some research on this.

Artists and photographers who own copyright are annoyed with sites that use their images without a direct link back to their site, so Google get round this by making all photos "clickable" links, i.e click on the photo and go to the original artist website.

Unfortunately once we "hotlink" to those same pictures the "direct" link no longer exists.

From what the artist and photographers are saying they don't even like the way Google does it, saying that no more than a thumbnail should be shown and to see the original you must be forced to go to the site.

Whilst what we are doing may seem like harmless fun, these images are peoples livelihoods. I knew an artist many years ago who had an image stolen and used as a logo, he did not have the money to fight it and lost out.

I know the "count to thread" will be a little more difficult now but not impossible.

I agree. I don't find it hard to find a pic that hasn't got a copyright though.

Just because something doesn't have a copyright notice on it doesn't mean it isn't covered by copyright. After thinking about it some more, I'm actually more comfortable with posting some of those clipart images that say who they belong to and where you can find them, because then it's clear that whoever posted it here is not claiming ownership or authorship. Otoh, those same sites also make it quite clear that you can not use their images without paying.

Really, we should be restricting ourselves to sites that explicitly say their images are free for public use, or government sites which (I believe) are automatically in the public domain. Also, the game rules should allow for a text link (rather than just making the image an active link) back to the owner's site if that's what the owner wants for use of the image.*

I freely admit I have not been living within these guidelines myself, but if we make it a rule I will do so.

*Quick primer on how to use the URL tag for those who don't know (I think most of you at least know the simple method):

1. Type some preliminary text, if you want, then click the URL button above the text editing window.

2a. (Simple link) Paste in the link. Viewers will see the URL and it will be an active link they can click.

2b. (Complex) Move your cursor to the left of the right bracket ]. Type an equal sign = and paste your link. Move your cursor back to the right of the bracket and type the text you want to appear as a link. Viewers will see the text and it will be an active link to the URL you hid inside the tag.

2c. (Picture) Hide your link within the URL tag as in 2b, but instead (or in addition) to typing some text outside the tag, put your Img tags there.

3. Click the URL button again. You should get the closing tag with a slash / in it.

4. Preview! to make sure it looks the way you want it to. (However, if you want to test the link, right-click it and open in a new window or tab; even if your forum settings are set to automatically open links in a new tab, it won't happen when previewing a post.)

If you have already typed a bunch of text and then decide you want to go back and put a link in the middle of it, you'll have to type the tags manually instead of clicking the buttons. This forum system always puts tags at the end of your text, not where the cursor is. It's easy, though. Put the cursor where you want it and type [ URL ] without the spaces. For method 2b and 2c, put the = and the link address inside. At the end of your link, type [ /URL ] (again without the spaces). Then definitely preview to make sure the link works right and you didn't accidentally make the whole remainder of the post a link.

The Mods did not want to be killjoys on the count thread, But we have had a number of redX's complaing about copyrighted posts. So one of the Mods contacted a site and asked them directly about using them. The response we got back was if you use them you must pay for the right.

We kicked it up to Fred to ask the legal department at UC Berkely what the score is. He kicked it up to Eric. In the meantime we were told to hide all copyrighted pics until we hear some feedback. That was Saturday night.

As of yet we have no word, as would be expected on the weekend.

A number of artists will allow free linkage, provided you place their required message alongside the image, so they may require the simple acknowledgement that Chris describe, or they may require the whole page, with all the purchase details etc. -it is their property we are viewing, and its is their source of income, it is up to them.
