	Salt in olden times was a very valuable commodity, it could preserve meat and fish on long sea voyages, sterilise wounds etc. The phrase "A man worth his salt" means any man worth his wages. Sailors are called "Old sea salts", and the we have the phase "The salt of the earth". Centuries ago salt was so valuable that many people used to have part of their pay in salt, as mentioned in the bible. Roman soldiers are also supposed to have been paid in salt. There is archeological evidence that salt was extracted from sea water as far back as 6000BC. Medieval Europe was forever changed when fishermen were able to salt the cod caught off North America’s Grand Banks, preserving them for sale in Europe. Class dismissed.

	Yet another un-necessary device to trim the edges of pies. LOL!!!!!!!!!!! I do not know if that is the correct answer, but if that wonderful Mystery Kitchen Thread has taught me anything, it is that if I buy all of those devices, there will be no actual room in my kitchen for me to cook!
