I have been running BOINC for some time using multiple identities of Windows 7. Recently had to delete and reinstall BOINC and have been using it on identity A but when I switch to Identity B I get the subject message even though I am "running as administrator."

Anybody have a clue how to solve this.

Is the registry of identity B pointing to the right BOINC data directory?

If you are running in Protected Application Execution (service) mode, are the BOINC users/groups identical (access rights)?

Not sure about all that. Seems I remember that when I installed BOINC I checked the option to allow all users so the registry should be correct.

The BOINC Manager (BOINC_mgr.exe) communicates with the BOINC Daemon (BOINC.exe) over TCP port 31416. Therefore, BOINC.exe must be allowed to act as a server for port 31416 for the local host for local control only, or the LAN for control by another computer on the local network. On some firewalls, BOINC_mgr.exe must also be allowed to access the network on port 31416.

Finally got past the log-in problem and BOINC hung on the password. No idea what that was about.

However, today, more specifically this afternoon, BOINC suddenly resolved the issue all on its own.

Go figure.

Sir,

I am not particularly tech savvy, so wondering if you can help me out. I have a laptop that I use, runs seti at home without issue. On an older desktop, I have 2 user accounts, one in which I am an administrator, one account my wife uses as a user. (This is to limit damage, she knows how to get on the internet and that is about it) The problem is on that computer I am rarely logged on so the seti at home never runs. I want it to run when my wife is logged on, but when It starts under my wife's account it tells me cannot connect to client, have the admin add you to the boinc_users file. I tried navigating through the message boards, but no real luck figuring it out. I cannot find a boinc_user file, cannot find a gui file to change a password, have no idea how to change firewalls or enable ports, and am generally lost. Can you help me out with "the idiot's guide" version on how to get the program to run when my wife is logged on and I am not? I have recently updated to windows 8 and have the latest version of BOINC installed as of 30 JAN 13. I would really appreciate it.

The easiest way to fix that is to uninstall BOINC, then reinstall it and in the third screen in the installer, click Advanced. Next check "Allow all users on this computer to control BOINC" and continue installation.

Although, being here in the third screen, you may also want to check the Protected application execution option, which will install BOINC as a service. When it's installed as a service, it'll start up before anyone logs in. It'll also be running when everyone's logged out, but the computer is still on.

Seeing that it's a Pentium 4 without a GPU, that should be the best solution.
See this FAQ, which shows in pictures what to do to install BOINC as a service. It says it's for the 6 series, but essentially it's the same for the 7 series of BOINC. I haven't had time yet to adjust all FAQs.

If you still want to just add the user name to any group, that's also possible. It's not a file you have to adjust, but the user accounts and work groups. See this FAQ for more on that.

Sir,

I tried the steps you mentioned, reinstalled and selected allow all users to control, and run as a service. However, when I go from wife's account to my account, I still get a message that says "Another instance of BOINC Manager is already running on this computer, Please select a client to monitor." along with a box that says host name and another that says password. Do you know what I need to put in these boxes to get it operational on both accounts? Thank you very much again for your help.

Try:
host name: localhost
password: (leave empty/blank)

If empty/blank password do not work - try the password found in the file:
gui_rpc_auth.cfg
