Two years ago it was -55C one morning, the car started with 5W-30 oil; it was plugged in to the outside plug in. (115 volts.) The car will start without the plug-in down to -30C.

Our cars don't have plug in options. We really aren't geared up for weather below about -10C. Our infrastructure just isn't designed for it. The temps some areas are seeing at the moment will halt our trains, close our schools, burst our water mains and generally cause chaos. Friday the word of the day will be "snowmageddon" as a country wide fall is expected and many areas, mine included, have no snow clearing equipment.

My exposed copper water pipes are all insulated, one of these days I'll need to spend some money on new insulation, as what I have is slowly aging due to the sun, the rest of My pipes are cpvc and I don't worry about them, as those pipes are designed with extremes in mind, HOT or COLD. Most cars in the US have that as an option when New or could be retro fitted if it's a part that can be added in later to ones car or truck, as it can get quite cold here in the US, brr....

Winning before going to work. Oh and it's cold but I do have a plug in block heater and seat warmers. Life's little luxuries.

Wimps.

In northern Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana, everyone has a block heater and public parking spaces have outlets so you can plug in. Down here in Chicago, some people add block heaters but only use them at home overnight.

Vic, are your pipes on the outside of the house?

Right now it's 23F here, which isn't low enough to worry about unless it stays that low for a long time. This weekend we have a predicted high of 12 on Monday and a low of 0. That's when I worry about some stuff, but not my car.

We are having a snow drought, but it's snowing this morning 1,000 miles to the south in New Orleans.

Winning with free cookies from the lunch lady. She's winning with a 4-day weekend, while I only have three.

An ice age good enough to bring the Mammoths back would do.... ;)

They don't even start plowing here until it's 2 inches.

They'll never plow here as there are no snow plows!

Plenty of gritters about on the roads tonight, which is next to useless if snow falls.

Forecast is for 6-8" here tonight/tomorrow, which to be honest, with no snow plows, no winter tyres, no snow chains & very few people with experience of driving on snow, will just about cripple us. (You can guess it's a very infrequent event here!)

I'm thinking a lot of it will thaw as it falls, as it's still rather warm and the snow is only an hour away and things won't be so bad as the Met Office are telling us currently.
