800 Dead Babies Discovered in Septic Tank Of Home for Unwed Mothers

That's why the Irish government has jumped onto the back of our Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sex Abuse as a lot of the ground framework has already been done here so that they can get their own version up and happening pretty quickly over there.

Cheers.

That was just one home. There were many more. The dogma that lay at the heart of all this can be placed at the door of just one organisation & that is the catholic church.

They held Ireland in their grip for centuries & it was only in the early 1970's that it began to loosen.

Update on the above: -

Catholic church has no records

"The Tuam home was one of 10 institutions in which about 35,000 unmarried pregnant women - so-called fallen women - are thought to have been sent.

The children of these women were denied baptism and segregated from others at school. If they died at such facilities, they were also denied a Christian burial."

You really have to love politics & religion!

A large number of those women fell pregnant due to rape yet they were still labelled Fallen Women?

Ain't it grand being male!

At least this is a (for the area, a) radical even if small step in the right direction:

Egypt brings in new sexual harassment laws

Egypt has introduced new punishments for sexual harassment in an effort to crack down on the worsening problem. In a decree issued by outgoing interim president Adly Mansour, sexual harassment is now a crime punishable by up to five years in jail.

Until now, Egypt has not had a law defining sexual harassment...

One of the posters hits home exactly to the parents and elders:

"CONTROL YOUR SONS NOT YOUR DAUGHTERS"

As in get the sons to better behave rather than restrict all daughters to be never be seen...

For all: The start of a cultural shift for the better?

You can't change the bad intentions of people around you but you can build a protective shield yourself. That's what I learned by experience and what I'm also learning my children.

You can't change the bad intentions of people around you but you can ...

... Make a very big noise to drag cultural attitudes up to something better:

(Note: Very disturbing picture not to be repeated. Very unfortunately very real and almost unbelievable that it happened in this day and age...)

Avaaz: Stop the rape epidemic

I need your help. Two young girls were hanged from a tree after being gang raped in the fields outside their home in India and a minister from the ruling party just responded by saying that rape "is a social crime ... sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong.”

It's disgusting! But this isn't an isolated incident. I’ve been attacked in front of senior policemen and nothing was done. I know the system is totally failing India’s women. But together I think we can change it. ...

... An ad campaign like this has never happened before in India. But this is a national crisis and it requires drastic action. Sign now -- let’s get two million people to demand Modi protects India’s girls and women.

Peer pressure and the stigma of worldwide disgrace might just hit the decrepit attitudes and the shamefully dysfunctional religion and elders where it hurts...

Martin

Just to be clear for sensibilities: That campaign link leads to a very unfortunate image that is disturbing. Those that look more closely and are of reasonable mind should not help but be disturbed by the scene and particularly by the spectacle of the bystanders.

No comment possible for good reason in these reasonable forums...

Sadly it reminds me of some pictures of lynchings in the US back in the day. Very disturbing and very sad indeed.

Sadly it reminds me of some pictures of lynchings in the US back in the day. Very disturbing and very sad indeed.

Except in this case, the young victims were merely going to the toilet.

Such predatory danger must make for a dismal life:

Why India's sanitation crisis [and local culture allows men to] kill women

... Several studies have shown that women without toilets at home are vulnerable to sexual violence when travelling to and from public facilities or open fields.

The evidence is glaring. ...

All for the sake of a misogynist culture and religion.

Here's hoping the publicity from Avaaz and the positive power of the world's glare can drag both such a poisonous culture and complicit elders upwards to a better life for ALL.

Meanwhile, in a neighboring part of the world:

Pakistan's slow but steady progress on ending child marriage

The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), one of Pakistan's most influential religious and constitutional bodies, has announced that girls are ready for marriage the moment they reach puberty.

This is not the first time the CII has condoned child marriage. In April, it ruled that banning such unions was anti-Islamic. While the ruling does not have any bearing on policymaking, it could have a major influence on local religious leaders nationwide.

But the CII's controversial statements should not detract from the progress made on addressing child marriage in Pakistan. In fact, a new law that prevents under-18s, irrespective of gender, from getting married was passed unanimously by the provincial assembly in Sindh, raising hopes for the future for girls...

Except... Will that be enforced soon enough and effectively enough and the culture improved?...

Out of date myths to be tackled

To play devils advocate for a moment:

In the last year the number of completed prosecutions and convictions has increased, the CPS said today, but the conviction rate has dropped from 63.2 per cent in 2012-13 to 60.3 per cent in 2013-14.

They're decrying the drop in convictions as a failure of the justice system, there is another possibility, maybe the men who weren't convicted weren't guilty.
Maybe they were innocent, just because they were accused doesn't automatically make them guilty.
Maybe they were a victim of a vindictive woman who decided after the event that she'd been 'raped' in an attempt to get him locked up for something he didn't do, a case which fell apart when it came to court.
How do i know? I don't. But neither do you.

Labour’s shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said it was ‘very disturbing’ that despite an increase in the number of rape allegations reported to the police since 2010, convictions had been falling.
Perhaps the number of (genuine) rapes has fallen, it's a possibility. This sort of comment from ministers doesn't help the situation.
Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge.

Woman left partially blinded in appalling assault by misguided father-in-law who believed she had had affair

A father-in-law has been jailed after inflicting appalling and severe injuries on a family member, almost blinding her, after flying into a crazed revenge attack over an affair that had never taken place.

Manjit Mirgind, from Ilford, stabbed his daughter-in-law, 29-year-old Jageer Mirgind, several times in the face before trying to strangle her and gouging out both of her eyes in a serious assault witnessed by both of her two young children.

That campaign is looking to make a multimillion people strong force to force some positive ripples.

Can you too add your voice to move to a better world for all, for both men and especially women for those parts of the world?

Wild conjecture but... Could some positive change in that part of the world send a strong example to drag the neighbouring areas out of that one part of their pseudo-religious cultural medieval pestilence and misogyny that shames and blights all men and blights their women?...
