Given that in the past, Nigeria had the highest number of cases of FGM in the world (about one quarter of the estimated 115-130 million circumcised women) I am astonished more of a stink wasn't being made about this story in the western press MUCH sooner, Christian or not.

Okay, the government there has in the last few years tried to end the practise, but I kind of doubt that's made much of a dent amongst fundamentalists such as these ones. :(

I am familiar with the Liberian community in the Newark New Jersey area. In Liberia some tribes insist on female circumcision and some don't approve of it. The Christian Kru tribe has to be on the lookout for kidnappers from other tribes who will forcibly circumcise their girls unless a ransom is paid. The girls are returned ether way though. The authorities don't do anything about it; much of the world is not all comfy and academic like US. For a Liberian Newark is Shangri-La.

I just found out the girls were attending a Christian school. Odd that the press didn't mention this until their forced conversion. I think that is not just exclusive to Western culture. Loads of cultures have an obsession with virginity and consider it as a mark of purity. Consider in how many cultures it is seen as sinful or wrong for girls to have sex before marriage, so basically losing that purity to someone other than the person you married to? How many cultures mark girls that do that as 'slutty'.

I think what makes America or Western culture in general different is the hypocrisy when it comes to virginity. At the one hand, our culture tells girl that virginity = purity but at the same time there is considerable pressure on people to have sex. Its even worse if you consider the double standard we have when we take boys into account. No one will tell a guy hes damaged goods if he loses his virginity before marriage. No one, except maybe the extreme Christian right considers virginity as purity when were talking about guys. If anything, guys that don't have sex soon enough and often enough are quickly seen as losers .

Curious indeed.

Bit less extreme but there's an element of this in some British education too. I went to Catholic primary and middle schools and we repeatedly had it instilled into us that sex outside marriage was wrong, bad, we'd go to hell, fire, brimstone, eternal damnation, etc, and that even 'touching ourselves' would lead to the same result.
Fortunately i escaped to a state Grammar school when i was 13, which gave proper sex education so the damage was repaired. Teaching children the facts so they can make informed sensible decisions rather than trying to scare them with religious dogma has to be the better option.

A father doesn't really get the choice about who dates his daughter seeing as she isn't his property. Seeing as daughters are taught about men by watching how their father's behave, I'd say be like the man you want your daughter to marry. If a father thinks his daughter is making poor choices he might want to take a look in the mirror.

If you think you can successfully control a 16 year old girl without doing more psychological damage than its worth, then you are living in fantasy world. The more you try to control her the more likely she is to go and find the boy friend who will upset you the most.
