Juries also represent well...everyone. In a society still very much influenced by its patriarchal roots, juries are still very much biased against rape victims (rape culture) and therefor hold much higher standards before accepting that the accused is guilty.

If the prosecutors were to base their attempts on that, a lot less rape cases would make it to court, which is unfair towards the victims and helps to perpetuate the existing status quo around rape. The more rape cases the prosecution brings to court though, the better the chances are that it helps to positively change attitudes towards rape culture, so that in the future rapist do get convicted more easily.

A telling article from my dad's home town, Revealed: The shocking truth of 13,600 crimes gone unsolved
Tory councillor Peter Britcliffe said he was ‘surprised’ by the figures.

He said: “I am rather surprised at how high these figures are.

“We’re told that crime is reducing so hopefully that would mean unsolved ones are going down too.”

How women are viewed and treated is, no surprise, deservedly one of the hot topics here for doing something about it:

Well - this came as a bit of a surprise to me.
Uk most sexist nation

Going to find out a bit more... :)

Late edit: I'm back. Well... they must've come a long way in South Africa since I was last there (pre the end of Apartheid).

All I can say is, for a South African woman to be able to point her fingers at us is a bit of an indictment guys. You know who you are... :) now... what can I get you all (after I've slipped into that cute little maid outfit of course)

I dunno, that seems a little ridiculous to me. Yes, what she mentions is sexism or part of sexism, but I dunno, seems to me its also the...well...less 'extreme' kinds of sexism. Oh yeah sure, in other countries you are more likely to get raped, women have less legal and political rights, but its the worst in the UK because people there have easy access to porn, they take pictures of women eating sandwiches in the underground and there is a large old boys network. Boo UK, be more like those other countries, because they do it better! Which also makes me wonder how she is comparing those things because I'm pretty sure that every country that has easy access to the internet has easy access to porn, and that old boys network also doesn't seem like something that is confined to solely the UK.

Yes... I think you're right Мишель. My feeling is that she's expressing more about her own conservative reaction to what (I have no doubt) was a significant culture shock... bless her. :)

It doesn't of course excuse all you naughty boys out there :) - appalling a good sheltered girl like that with your page three wenches and obsessions with their "next-generation-feeding-equipment-unless-pre-inflated-with-silicone" bits :)

Oh no, definitely not trying to excuse Britain's sexist cultural elements.

In a small part of the world physically not too far away, but a world away for education for all:

Nigeria abductions: Military admits girls still missing

Nigeria's military has admitted that most of the teenage girls abducted by suspected Islamist militants have not been freed...

There has been confusion about the number of girls missing after they were kidnapped from a boarding school in the north-east on Monday night. According to education authorities in Borno state, 99 girls are still missing...

... Militants from Boko Haram - which means "Western education is forbidden" in the local Hausa language - frequently target educational institutions.

Saw that on the news a little while. :( Cannot believe they lied about rescuing them. Even had a nasty thought that perhaps they were "rescued" just not returned to their families... but that's almost more horrible to contemplate... :(

I fear their fate at the hands of those extremists isn't much better. Ive heard they often force those girls to 'marry' to some of the extremists at gun point, renounce their faith and then serve as domestic slaves for those warriors. Truly a beyond horrible fate.

And meanwhile, at a completely different level, we have:

Breastfeeding tweet burns Delta Airlines

When Lindsay Jaynes tweeted Delta Airlines's customer service account last Friday asking about its policy regarding breastfeeding her infant on an upcoming flight, the response sparked a social media firestorm...

... Despite the clarification from Delta, many breastfeeding advocates are still angry, calling for the airline to publish its official policy on breastfeeding and improve training of customer relations staff...

... Society has been sending this mixed message to mothers for generations. But to have it so demonstrated so clearly, on the social media feed of a major airline, is mind-blowing."...

Better education and better culture needed all round and all around the world!

I breastfeeded wherever I wanted to or whenever the kids were hungry, it's as natural as sneezing in public imo.

A petition to sign. for all those who object to FGM.

My friend, Afusat Saliu, faces being returned to Nigeria. She has removal directions for 25th April. If she goes back, there is a real risk of forcible FGM on her daughters. She fled to the UK when her step-mother expressed a wish to have her daughter Bassy cut. Bassy will be four in May; two year old Rashidat was born in London - Afusat fled while she was heavily pregnant.

In Afusat's village, FGM is usually performed on babies, which is when Afusat herself was cut. If she is made to return and her family catch up with her, it is likely that she will be powerless to protect them from being mutilated. Afusat is also in danger as she escaped a forced marriage to a man 40 years her senior to whom her family is indebted.

It's a grand life being a celebrity...get away with murder if it was possible.

Now famous for an entirely different reason

If you have any morals or conscience sign it!

But don't post the truth on Twitter. Odd when her "friends" "tweet" they are criminals but when big news does it it is a "mistake". Oh what a slippery slope to hell.

As of 6 October 2012, North Wales Police had arrested twenty three people on suspicion of offences relating to the naming of the victim. Police also investigated a mistake by Sky News which showed the name of the complainant on television.

P.S. How did Evans get convicted and not McDonald for engaging in the same activity with Crawford at the same time?

I just found out the girls were attending a Christian school. Odd that the press didn't mention this until their forced conversion. Could this be the reason for the slow response from the Muslim Nigerian government? I now look at this differentially; it is time for "The Great Satan" to pick up the cross of the crusaders.

Given that in the past, Nigeria had the highest number of cases of FGM in the world (about one quarter of the estimated 115-130 million circumcised women) I am astonished more of a stink wasn't being made about this story in the western press MUCH sooner, Christian or not.

Okay, the government there has in the last few years tried to end the practise, but I kind of doubt that's made much of a dent amongst fundamentalists such as these ones. :(
