Delhi rape case: Five accused plead not guilty

Five men have pleaded not guilty to the rape and murder of a female student in a Delhi bus in December...

Continuing:

Delhi rape accused found dead in prison

... Police say Ram Singh hanged himself in Delhi's Tihar jail, but defence lawyers and his family suspect he was murdered...

Tragedy of Delhi rape victim seeking better life

Neat stacks of medical text books, a sharply-designed carrier bag from a clothes store, an English novel and pairs of smart shoes in the draughty bedroom of the 23-year-old Delhi gang rape victim, tell the story of a woman determined to make the leap to a middle class lifestyle for her and her family.

After visiting the spartan house in a rundown Delhi neighbourhood where she lived with her parents and brothers, you could see how much they had put into helping her realise the dream...

The rapes that India forgot

... Geeta Pandey in Delhi recalls other prominent cases which made the headlines, then faded from public memory...

How long before a cultural change for the better?...

Can anyone from India comment on these forums?

Of all the people involved, 1 was sentenced to 2 years, the other to 1 year.

Wrong town? This one just had its verdict.

I guess I assume too much.

I assumed you knew that Columbus was the state capital.

I assumed you knew the charges were for violating state law.

I assumed you knew they were sentences according to state law.

I see I assumed too much.

I presume you know how many they granted immunity to. I presume you know how ruined her life is as a result.
I presumed you knew it was not all of the possible charges, nor the harshest sentences.
I presumed you knew for all the people directly involved, total sentences of 3 years might be considered a bit light.

But I can wait for you to catch up.

Unfortunately for her, she can not.

... If you thought some of the atrocities against women and girls in Afghanistan was bad... Perhaps India and Pakistan hide a yet more grievous atrocity in their culture:

How India treats its women

Hopefully the continued press interest in all this will have a positive effect?

UK tourist jumps from Agra balcony 'after massage offer'

... a wake-up call at 04:00 but when the hotel owner knocked on her door then, he offered her a massage.

She told police he would not leave so she locked the door and jumped from her balcony to the level below...

... It added that reported cases of sexual assault against women and young girls were increasing and recent sexual attacks against female visitors in tourist areas and cities show that foreign women were also at risk.

Following an alleged gang rape of a Swiss tourist in Madhya Pradesh state last week, police arrested six people.

The woman was attacked with her husband as they camped in woodland near a village in Datia district.

The arrests came as India's politicians prepared to debate a new law against rape, after the outcry over the fatal assault on a female Delhi student last year.

I presume you know how many they granted immunity to.

I assumed you are familiar with Kastigar v. United States - 406 U.S. 441 (1972) and that a grant of immunity does not preclude prosecution.

I presume you know how ruined her life is as a result.
I presumed you knew it was not all of the possible charges,

I assumed you know the other state charges aren't provable without lots more immunity being passed out.

nor the harshest sentences.

I assumed you were aware of 2929.11

I presumed you knew for all the people directly involved, total sentences of 3 years might be considered a bit light.

I assumed you were familiar with A PLAN FOR JUVENILE SENTENCING IN OHIO

I assumed you knew it wasn't over yet, and the victim will be forced to relive it time and time again in court from the witness stand.

And then the Feds can get involved.

But I can wait for you to catch up.

Unfortunately for her, she can not.

A different world or the same plain old vicious persecution all in the name of 'culture'?

Avaaz: Horror in paradise

It's hard to believe, but a 15-year-old rape survivor in the Maldives has been sentenced to be whipped 100 times in public! Let's put an end to this lunacy by hitting the government where it hurts: the tourism industry.

The girl says she was raped by her stepfather and others for years and her stepfather is accused of murdering the baby she bore. Now the court says she must be flogged for “sex outside marriage”!...

... Women are seen as a necessary nuisance.

Where did it all go wrong .......

All a consequence of:

Religions written by men for men;
(misogynous) culture;
social groupings larger than that of an isolated village?

Excesses of unchecked 'anonymity'?

Yes, I am on the girls side, I think that in the modern world they get a rough deal, and it isn't right.

Never meant to imply you weren't for them. Just that the thought process about them always being weak isn't true. However you would never know that from the work of Royal Academy of Sciences, which is what so many of us were taught.

Women are every bit as strong as we need to be. The question that screams through my mind unanswered is, just how strong do we need to be?

Hi Janice,

just how strong do we need to be?

Apparently stronger than you should have to be ...

The BS that men went hunting and women tended kids because men are stronger is BS. Men were ordered to hunt because they are expendable. Men retaliated with religion.

I think there are still some misconceptions about what life was like in the stone age. Hunting wouldn't have even been the main source of food.

In hunter and gatherer societies everyone would have pitched in who was able.

The same one farming started. Surely the Americans here are aware just how tough the pioneer women were who came the New World. Those women did everything with the men and were tough as nails. If they didn't, the families wouldn't have survived.
