Spectacles and arms are parts of (old) railroad signals.
The spectacles are the colored glass that the lamps shine thru.

star-crossed lovers

Am I being too obvious here? I can't find any rules about whether one is
supposed to wait for a challenge, or in fact about anything to do with this thread.

There is no particular rule that I know of. Sometimes I wait for a challenge that never comes, other times I just pre-emptively post an explanation here. It just depends on how obscure you think your word linkage is. In your case above, I think I would have waited, but it's the poster's judgment.

It would be nice, however, if all who were challenged would answer.

I tend to adopt the "don't explain until challenged" approach, after all that's how it's played as a parlour game.

Or even
bubble = squeak = oil

(burst and squeak overlapped, giving the next poster a bit of a quandary)

Perhaps it is because some are, that they don't ....

bubble > burst is obvious, right?

Then Rob came 15 seconds after my burst with his squeak, which on reflection I don't get as a response to bubble. However, at the time I didn't feel quandarized (quandarous? quanderous?), I just thought, when something squeaks, you oil it.

Bubble and Squeak is a traditional English / British recipe.

Some of my wife's Canadian cousins have made it for us.

Born December 66. Technically yes, a child of the 60s, but too young to qualify for your meaning.

I thought it was the 30s.

I never meant to say I didn't get the reefer reference, just that I didn't think in that direction.
