Message 1347305 - Posted: 16 Mar 2013, 13:41:36 UTC

Frisian made me the only person in my college geography class to get 100 on an exam. The prof mentioned it in class in such an offhanded way that no one, even me, expected it to be on the exam. But it's the kind of trivia I like, so I remembered it.

Then I also got 100 on the second exam, again the only one in the class. The third exam was the last night of class and I never found out what I got on it. Got an A for the class, though.

Neither Bavarian or Frisian are Languages, but are considered Dialects of a form of Low German
Pfalzisch is in the same Catagory.
Bavaria and the Pfalz are closely linked.

This is slightly more complex than how my geography professor presented it.

LOL, I was raised in all those low languages, but expected to speak the High Ones in official meetings my Grandfather attended with me in tow.

Reminds me of High School Spanish. The textbooks taught proper Castillan Spanish, which made it very difficult for my classmates who spoke Mexican or Spanglish at home.....

I had kind of the opposite problem. My mother had learned proper Spanish in college and my high school taught us mostly the dialect of Mexico, a little of Puerto Rico, and just a bit of Spain. She didn't really remember enough for me to practice with anyway. I dropped the class a month into the third year when it became obvious I wasn't really learning much. Too bad, though; the third year teacher was Cuban.

Ireland has n snakes - so a bit of inverted logic
(St.Paddy is supposed to have chucked them off the island many centuries ago)

Not sure of the trigger for the mass expulsion of snakes, I can but presume it had something to do with someone being bitten and St.Paddy deciding that having snakes around wasn't a good idea.

measurements

My first thought was, can I get away with saying "36-24-36"?

(Those are the classics, not necessarily my faves.)

Is that a legitimate connection for this thread?

When I saw those two words together my thoughts went straight to the Emperor's new clothes - apparent apparel in the extreme
