AH, the power of the people who refuse to state the obvious.

To be honest I didn't think "Tithe Barns" were unusual.

And for our American cousins the obvious word after tithe should be dime.
Well that's my warped thinking anyway.

Besides, I want to apologize for my mistake.
I posted a word that had already been published by Rob : Crop
Sorry Rob and all the followers of the Word Link.
Will not happen again.

Julie, small question, please : at what point do you decide to open a new forum "Word Link" ?

That's ok, Tom:)

When there are more than 500 posts in the thread, I start a new one because it's getting too long then.

Maybe Chris can tell you he always spouting la langue française

I say old chap, I never spout. I may proclaim. prevaricate, opine, comment, observe, or even merely state, but I never spout. I am more accustomed to be likened to a pot rather than a kettle!

At least according to some ....

Both of which are very useful items, and often produce good things to eat and drink!

Actually, no. We use Tithe for the tenth that the church gets.

John is correct. Farmers gave one tenth or a tithe of their produce, as a contribution to the church, and a tithe barn was where this produce was stored under cover. "Buddy can you spare a dime" has a connotation as a charitable gift, although that is voluntary, the tithes were compulsory.

To "nick" something is UK slang for to pinch or steal.

I thought that was obvious - even from this side of the pond.
