AH, the power of the people who refuse to state the obvious.

To be honest I didn't think "Tithe Barns" were unusual.

And for our American cousins the obvious word after tithe should be dime.
Well that's my warped thinking anyway.

I say old chap, I never spout. I may proclaim. prevaricate, opine, comment, observe, or even merely state, but I never spout. I am more accustomed to be likened to a pot rather than a kettle!

Actually, no. We use Tithe for the tenth that the church gets.

John is correct. Farmers gave one tenth or a tithe of their produce, as a contribution to the church, and a tithe barn was where this produce was stored under cover. "Buddy can you spare a dime" has a connotation as a charitable gift, although that is voluntary, the tithes were compulsory.

Actually, no. We use Tithe for the tenth that the church gets.
