That new seal is not only hideous but down right ugly. Calling it a flushing toilet is disrespecting the toilet. I had a good laugh at the pepper spraying seal though. To go one step further, The guy should be peeing on that new seal.

Chris,
It's true that this logo is radically different than the old and it may shock some people, but I think they should have need of revival. I think it's deliberately focused on the Internet to show that the University knows how to take the turn to modernity. I'm not saying this is the best logo they could have chosen but we need more explanation on the strategic and marketing choices that led to the creation of this logo. And I'm sure you know that creating a logo often appears to be completely abstract, even absurd, as it appeals to our unconscious when we look.
I can even give you the example of a corporate logo operator number 1 in France in the telecommunications sector, France Telecom. This company called Orange and here's the logo :

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:Orange_logo.svg

Can you imagine the heads of people on the day of the unveiling of the logo ? Yet today, the logo is recognized all over the world and has gained notoriety as nobody knew the day of the unveiling. We can say that it's a success. We even conflates Orange & France Telecom ! The reason for this success remain mysterious...

In any case, I would like to read the full analysis of the new University logo. With much more explanation than just this sentence :

What we have tried to do is to create a mark that is iconic, flexible, and solid enough that it works to represent the UC system as a whole

Have you all forgotten, Governor Moonbeam is back in charge of California. Such shenanigans is to be expected.

As to some of those other versions, I'm surprised someone didn't come up with a version with pee swirling down a loo.

Thanks very much WinterKnight,

I think there are three things to remember in this article which are particularly interesting :

"The seal signifies the prestige and tradition of the university itself, and is a treasured part of the UC identity," Simon said. "There has never been any plan to replace it with the monogram."

A small team of UCOP designers did the work in-house, Simon said, and the campus community was consulted throughout the development process. Consultation included discussions with an array of campus, parent and alumni audiences. Communications leadership from each campus was involved in reviewing design ideas but also in suggesting broader outreach strategies to build greater awareness and understanding of the university system.

The monogram serves an entirely different visual function than the UC seal — and media images showing the two symbols side by side have fueled that misunderstanding, Simon said.

I don't think whether it's a demagogic speech...
But it seems that the logo is hated by all ! Oups...

protesting to SETI would not help.. protesting to Berkeley probably would not help. It would be decided by ALL the UC campuses. they all look silly.

But cutting funding because of a bad logo would not make sense either.

Los Angeles Times | December 14, 2012 | 10:10 AM

After a firestorm of criticism, the University of California will suspend the use of its new, modernistic logo, officials said today

The move comes after an online revolt complete with mocking memes, Twitter insults and a petition to restore the old logo.

Yep, the old logo was just fine, the new one, reminds one of a flushing toilet I've read.

Do we need an iconic logo's thread?
like Phillips, Plessey ...

edit] notice that car makers usually keep logo no matter how many times they change hand, e.g. Jaguar

If an institution or company has a reputation or history of quality, respect, standards, whatever....
I think they lose a lot by ditching the labels or symbols that have represented that for so long.

There is something to be said for tradition.

Or in the case of UC, being 'old school', as I think that a lot of people are coming to realize that standards and morals held in the past were superior to what society has now.
