I returned to the lab again on Monday (after nearly 2 months off traveling all over Europe from France to Bulgaria and everything in between). Many thanks once again to Jeff and Eric who maintained operations during my absence (and dealing with the heinous power outage/database corruption woes last week).

The BOINC_VM Virtual Machine downloaded from Test4Theory@home, using only 256 MB RAM, is running CERN jobs using Scientific Linux. This is a Linux with no GUI but I see the OS booting and starting up in the BOINC_VM window. All Windows and Mac OS X user can download their BOINC_VM and they all run the same CERN jobs using a program called PYTHIA simulating proton-proton collisions in the Large Hadron Collider.

All Windows and Mac OS X user can download their BOINC_VM and they all run the same CERN jobs using a program called PYTHIA simulating proton-proton collisions in the Large Hadron Collider. There's a build of SL specifically for CERN called, not surprisingly, Scientific Linux CERN or SLC for short -- http://linux.cern.ch. As far as stability goes, it does lag behind the latest kernel, etc., versions. My experiment is still on SLC5 so I have library problems running, e.g., BOINC out of the box. Even on SLC6 I have to compile my own BOINC because of library issues. ____________

The Test4Theory@home developers are testing a new wrapper (vboxwrapper) instead of the current cernvm, which needs the BOINC client to be at least 7.0.x to run. Since I my SuSE Linux I am still at 6.10.58 because later Berkeley versions do not start, as they are based on Ubuntu, and the libboinc7 package in the SuSE repository is marked as "unstable", I shall have a problem on my 2 Linux boxes with SuSE 12.1 and 12.2, while on my Solaris VM, which is running a BOINC client and a seti@home app by Dotsch, neither BOINC nor Test4Theory@home are supported and it is a pity, since Solaris 11.1 which I am running is rock solid.
